Or is this just for the US market?

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo....etc.
If this is true then I won't be getting another GTI. I don't like the 5 door.
-
Lets hope so!
Looks like its just in the US - the facelift A3/S3 is still available here in 3 door so doubt they would drop it on the Golf.
-
Lack of 3dr would be a deal breaker for me on buying another Golf.....
-
The Golf looks ridiculous with 3 doors anyway so no harm done
-
Same here....Would never have a 5dr, just doesn't feel right
Might make the CS worth super duper dough if its the last of the 3drs
-
You didn't get a choice with the mk1, but i would only want a 3door mk1 anyway
3 door mk2s were incredible
3 door mk3s and 4s were the best of a bad bunch
3 door mk5s just look wrong in my opinion, the rear windows are the wrong shape
Its 50/50 with mk6s
But its back to number 1 for the 3 door mk7.
It depends on the car.

I seem to remember reading at the height of Dieselgate last year VW CEO Muller stating that in future there would be fewer model variants to help keep costs under control. It's also been reported in the motoring press that the next generation Polo, due to be launched next year, will be 5 door only.
-
Well Ford have done it with the RS for the first time in history
-
Maybe VW will follow Ford (latest Focus) and stop production of slow selling 3 door medium hatchbacks? It'll save a fair few Euros in production rationalising of bodyshells.
For Europe that would be more likely to be mk8 surely? Can't see the FL MK7 going 5 door only in Europe... or will they? :nerd:
On the plus side, hopefully that'll mean an all new MQB Scirocco to mop up 3 door sales.
-
I have a 3dr Mk4, but since then, I think the Golf has grown too big to carry off 3 doors. When the Scirocco was launched, it was thought that it would take over 3 door Golf sales. Granted it is only a 4 seater, but then someone buying a 3 door Golf is not as likely to be carrying many rear passengers. As the Golf has moved on, the Scirocco has stood still, which has no doubt put potential customers off.
If there is a up to date Scirocco when the Mk8 Golf arrives, it should easily replace the 3 door Golf.
-
I have always tended to be a die hard 3 door fan but for me on the Mk7 the doors are to long and given the ridiculous stops on them I have just found them a pain when I used it as my daily for a few months
I think the sill detail under the doors also works better on the 5 door
I regret when i had a reorder was having five doors and changing the colour to white, I think if i had done it may have had a stay of execution for another year

I don't like the Scirocco either
I suspect though VW don't manufacture cars just to please me. I may have to defect to another brand or just keep my GTI 'til it drops.
-
I guess VW not doing a 3 door Golf is much like VW not doing facelifts.... this is 2016 and in case you haven't noticed ANYTHING can happen and probably will...
-
The scirocco (like its replacement, the corrado) used to be a coupe but now after its resurrection it's just a badly proportioned 3 door golf, i have seen good looking ones but that's after quite a lot of tasteful, subtle modifications.
-

Apart from the Ford Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth in the lates 80's / early 90's
I currently have a MK3 Focus ST which I think pulls off have 4 doors well but with the golf I just preferred the look of 3 doors over 4.
Each to their own what makes us different, I almost ordered a Scirocco but I'm really not keen on its bubble butt, i think it has a prettier front than the Golf.
-
Ah the sapphire cosworth 4 door, there were also a handful of mk2 rs2000s with 4 doors.
-
Can't wait, no manual cars at some point in the near future for hatchbacks and family cars, no 3 doors and hopefully they will discontinue LSG in the GTi PP. You will be hard pushed in 15 years to find a manual, 3 door PP in LSG (if you want an unusual colour) Will all make my car worth about 2 pound more in years to come, but at least it will be rare...

Odd that it doesn't have the black painted rear panel. Also the seats don't look quite right.

There were 2 versions of the mk2 Escort RS2000; the standard model and the custom model. It was the custom model that had Recaros with 'fishnet' headrests and the black panel between the rear lights. The standard model didn't get these. It's a 'standard' model in the pictures.

I remember the base model and the optional custom pack. You also got such luxuries as a clock. I thought they all had black rear panels tho'. I guess that's as all the ones that were round here back in the day had the custom pack.

I worked with a guy that had one of the last ones produced; a 1980/81 'W' reg custom model in white. I always wanted one but alas never did :(
