Hi Folks
I'm looking for some advice from you all as I'm toying with the idea of changing the GTD for another Performance Golf. I'd value your input and any tips you could pass on from your own experiences.
I took the car over 4 years PCP, but the dealer emailed me a few weeks ago (VW standard generic email) saying "how they'd like to appraise it and as the car is coming up to 3 years old in November, now could be the right time to change" etc etc
I am tempted by the £2,000 dealer contribution under PCP on the GTI and R (not Clubsport) and that ends on the 30th September.
My preference would be: Golf R, Golf GTI Clubsport (if available and a discount!), Golf GTI Performance.
I know it boils down to the figures and what I can afford i.e. my deposit amount, any equity in my GTD and the monthly repayments.
My GTD is quite highly specc'd and there's currently only 22k on the clock and it's in immaculate condition.
Do you think it's possible to ask for discount on top of their £2,000 VW discount?
All advice appreciated...

Highly specced and immaculate don't add much to a p/x offer at the dealerships vs average condition. You'll be lucky to see 20% return on your options. Might be better to sell privately as it sounds like yours could be more desireable than most.
Of course you can ask for more than the PCP contriburion - see what the brokers are offering (inclusive of deposit contribution) and see how close you can get the dealers to that figure, or sell privately and go with a broker. Aim to get 85% of used sticker price at the dealerships in p/x.

The £2000 is a sweetener from VW Finance and nothing to do with dealer margins, any discount will go over and above that as MH says.
If you're going the part ex route then don't expect to get top book price coupled with Drive the Deal discounts unless you're lucky enough to hit the dealership in the sweet spot of a sales manager being one sale away from a big bonus and them knowing your car will be snapped up as they have a potential buyer lined up.
At this time of year they're expecting a surge of part ex cars in with the new registration followed by the winter sales slow up. VW will possibly do more sweeteners over winter with finance packages (interest rates having just dropped) and other sales promotions but bear in mind part ex values drop off over winter too as they don't want dead stock hanging around for months covered in ice and snow...
If there's a longish lead time on a build then I'd attempt a private sale if your car is well specced and mint then go with a broker who will get the best prices as they tend to use the fleet department for those sales working on different targets and bonuses with more headroom for discounts.
There's no perfect way of doing it, just don't rush into a deal as there are always other ones around the corner, unless you're buying a model that's particularly sought after of course. And aside from the GTI CSS I can't think of another VW that has massive demand right now. The R is in over supply, there are millions of GTD's about and after Dieselgate they're not quite as good with residuals as they were a couple of years ago, and the poor old underrated GTI tends to get a bit ignored due to the R.
As for the Clubsport? Meh. I'd like to have a look at one to see what the fuss is about but...

You need to get a settlement figure from VWFS and a reasonable idea of the cars private sale price before you do anything else - then you know what equity there may be in the current car.
Discounts from brokers are around 13% and this is on top of any other incentive.

Thanks Guys. Lots to think about. I'm not going to rush into anything. Great advice

Be prepared to be very shocked by the Clubsport figures.
The CS worked out £250pm more than I am paying for an R due to the levels of discount, or lack of on the CS.
Not sure if anything has changed since April but it was a real eye opener for me and the wife as we went in to buy a CS.

Wow that's pretty crazy, £250 pm more for the CS. I'm sure you are enjoying the R!
