Post by: SCOTTE on 15 August 2016, 20:07
Hi all, just deciding if i should add mudguards for Carbon grey colour GTI there are pros and cons, just after your thought and pictures if possible.

Thanks

Mudguards go very well with wooden bead seat covers.

Don't forget the pine tree air fresher to hang from the rear view mirror.

There are always naysayers They are welcome to there opinion but only you can decide whether the extra protection they afford and or the desire to be a little different is for you.

I fitted OEM mud flaps to my M7pp and thought they definitely improved the look, so much so that I have just spent considerable time and effort fitting a set of non OEM flaps to my R.

I think they look good on Black and Silver cars but not so much on Red, White or Blue.

I had them on my Carbon Grey mk6 GTD; not for the aesthetics, but mainly to protect the lower half of the car from stones being thrown up by the tyres, and to reduce the amount of tar deposits. With the car being Carbon Grey, the mudflaps weren't that obvious either. They do very little to stop the back end of the car getting dirty though; that's down to the shape of the Golf (and other hatchback cars), as dirt gets sucked onto the rear end in wet weather.

I don't have mudflaps on my current car (Polo GTI) as VW don't make them for this model. I have to say, I've not noticed a massive difference in how dirty the car gets or how clean it stays compared to my GTD with mudflaps. I do think that aesthetically, no mudflaps is a better look.

Not necessary for any reason IMO. They don't give much extra protection and you are left with that "pipe and slippers" look, as previously said. Leave it as nature intended!

Not many rally cars haven't worn mud flaps  (various escorts, sierras, lancias, vws, evos and imprezas), all sorts mudflaps have always made me think rally cars.

Hi Scottie I specced them in my build as I knew I was keeping the car we bought it outright and I knew I was gonna put spacers on and they would help protect the paintwork around the trailing part of the arches and cill. . I like them but as said each to their own and tbh on a dark coloured golf like the carbon grey you lose them anyways..

This is mine with spacers and Flaps fitted

Hi Scotte

I think the best way to look at it, is not from an aesthetics point of view, but whether you are keeping the car for 5-10 years?  If not don't worry too much about it, just drive the car and leave them off and forget about them. I fitted them because we are keeping the car for 10 years, (very rare these days) I didn't fit them for the dirt along the doors so much but to try protect the small metal area of the wing that faces the tyre at the bottom of the sill, it will take a LOT of abuse. So if you are keeping the car for a very long time, the fronts would likely be a worth while investment.

Rears are pointless, no metal parts to corrode behind to protect, and no reduction in rear window dirt.

Our car, Its not a GTD but you get the idea, they don't stand out very much imo.  But i'm sure some are cringing at the site of them

I've got Mudflaps all round on my Carbon Grey GTD and they really don't stand out at all.

Spot the Mud Flaps - possibly the only R with them.

i know everyone is a lover or hater of mudflaps/guards but personally on the carbon grey they are not really noticeable, they dont stick out like a sore thumb, but thats my own opinion, heres an image of my motor with them on
