Title: Jackie upholstery wearing out...
Post by: candywhite12 on 15 August 2016, 19:04
Edge of driver's seat at the point of entry has started wearing really thin - I even had my mother in law sewing a small hole that was opening up. Another one appeared recently. Any remedies for this besides the needle?

I believe you can get new covers for the seats from VW, but likely to be expensive though! A good car upholsterer would be able to make new covers or replace the worn sections much cheaper.

When I initially got my mk6 GTD, I was conscious that I brushed the edge of the seat bolster getting in and out. I changed the way I got in and out of the car to avoid contact with the bolsters. Felt really strange to start with but soon became quite natural. When I sold the car at nearly 5 years old, the seats were pretty much as new with no signs of wear.

tried to do that, i even placed a cloth against the edge so i didn't rub on it while entering/exiting the car, but it felt unnatural to me so i gave up.  Changing the seat with an aftermarket cloth is not an option as i really like the factory one, i;ll probably look to glue it somehow or sew it again

You can get VW Jacara fabric as used in the mk6 GTI, so a good auto-upholsterer could make replacement covers that are the same as the originals. Shouldn't be a problem matching the plain grey material used for the side bolsters.
