Title: DSG OWNERS
Post by: SCOTTE on 09 August 2016, 13:48
For those of you that have DSG what do you tend to use, Drive,Sport or Manual and do you use the paddles to change gears or the Gearstick

Just looking for all types of feedback please Good and Bad.

Thanks

to be honest i use them all, depending on driving situations, around town lots of stop start i just leave in drive, use paddles on a journey and the gearstick

Paddles mostly but in stop-start traffic I just leave it in D

This is my second car with DSG and I absolutely love it

It's in D if I want to disengage brain and paddles if I am 'driving' the car

Auto S mode is un-usable imo. So for me it's probably in D about 80% of the time. When I want to play, I put it into "S", then flick over to manual (so that its in manual "S" mode).

Was reluctant to take up, the wife convinced me to try it.

Total convert, it's amazing tech, seamless and fluid for the majority of times.

Have learned to move the lever from D to S in anticipation of the times when D is not going to get you away in as quicker fashion as would like.

Use the paddles rarely where thought would be 50-50 at least, but the reality is that its 90-10 and just use the S when want to push the GTD more.

In unison with the auto hold it takes all the stress out of day to day commuting and any motorway crawls, that achy left knee from too many years of football now fresh and rested at end of a journey instead of on/off the clutch repeatedly.

As said the tech is seamless, intuitive and you lose nothing in sporting ability with good argument to gaining with the seamless and quick changes.

My experience is with the GTD and was one of first items ticked for my upcoming R

D most of the time. Paddles to short shift when doing foot to the floor overtakes and S when I want it to more readily select lower gear when towing up wiggly hills.

use bit of all sorts!  keep it in d when your just dodlling about!  pop it in race and it keeps hold of the gears too long unless your racing someone hahaha... i like it in race mode but knocked over to manual so it sounds good, holds the revs but can change when u want.

I use the lot.

Around town is a mix of D, for stop start traffic and Auto S /S manual (paddles), most often slipping from D to Auto S for roundabouts, lights and other quick get always.  Rural is usually S manual (paddles).  Any longer journeys are usually in D for boring motorway parts and S/S manual when roads get more interesting.

If in manual I prefer to use paddles rather than stick, which is why I upgraded the paddle shifters.

Always use autohold (one of the best features in combo with DSG IMO) but never use Stop Start, I switch that off each journey.

I love the versatility of DSG and on a day to day basis (normal commute and work related journeys) use all of the options.

Thanks all, seems like a lot of fun with a lot of variety.

one question though is it ok to change from say sport to drive mode and drive mode to manual while driving or do you need to stop first then change it? dont want to break the expensive box changing on the move?

Do what you like, on the move, Scotte. In the end, the box controls itself and will not self distruct. Folk talk about a manual box being more involving, but I reckon being able to perform almost instant changes, as and when necessary, even mid corner, is as involving as it gets. Along with the ability to just select D and relax makes it the future for me. Total convert!

Yep, it's perfectly fine to move from D to S and vice versa whilst on the move.

That's a good point as you cannot do anything stupid in manual, as the DSG box has thresholds. You can go to the limits so its not inhibiting any performance but it will not allow you to break it.

You can be lazy in manual for example, you go from 4th > 3rd > 2nd as look not to stop at a junction and have a rolling exit, but if you do stop, the DSG will select 1st

Did state that used Auto 90% of the time, but thats a little deceiving as often in Sport (S) and override the auto for usually a higher gear as would like to stay in Sport for upcoming road but the low gear not really suitable for the small stretch on so you can take over manually but when detects (30s>1m) you not using paddles it reverts back to auto

So in support of above, its seamlessly flexible, you can be Auto and change the gear rations on the move, you can move to manual on the move, you can temporarily select a gear while in auto etc and so on.

Its really easy tech to use, and allows you manipulate to whatever suits in a second.

Know there are many manual enthusiasts who think you lose something from going to DSG and on the older style auto that drove in America in past, thats very true, but DSG tech is night and day from them, and for me you lose nothing and add a load more
