Hello All,
Can anyone tell me exactly where the by-pass valve is?
Is it easy to change?
how much for a new one?
is it the grey metal thing on one of the rubber pipes going into the car from the engine(digi)?
Your help would be much appreciated!

I think its on the coolant pipes going through the bulkhead to the heater matrix. I've read an article about it somewhere, I'll try and dig it out.........failing that, golfvr6 is quite clued up on it.

Just found this at Matey-Matey:-
Heater Matrix Failure: If the heaters blast out damp air then the heater matrix has burst. All Mk2s were recalled to have a pressure relief valve fitted to prevent this occurring. Check to see if the recall has been carried out. One of the hot water pipes that go through the bulkhead should have been cut and the valve added. If not then take the car to VAG and get it done (No expense)

Rich is spot on there, as usual ::)

I had this valve done on recall, and about 5 yrs later the heater
matrix started leaking. Just about to change it when my local
independant told me to take it back to VW as there was an admission by VW that this didn't always prevent the matrix from bursting. (Plastic ends instead of the original metal apparentley).Contacted the Dealer and no problem.

cheers guys but what is the bulk head?
Is the by pass valve silver?
p.s. i gotta 91 8v

The bulkhead is the structure that seperates the engine bay from the passenger cabin.

can anyone tell me if the by-pass valve is connected either end by hoses and is silver?
Is it cheap and easy to replace??
Cheers

It is silver. It goes between the 2 hoses that go into the bulkhead, just to the left of the coolant header tank.

Change the valve and flush the coolant. Can't be too expensive.
