Title: Golf R Manual vibrating gear stick?
Post by: adekil on 21 July 2016, 16:42
So the R finally arrived today but as of yet not had chance to take it out for very long!

But whilst I did drive the R, I noticed on a few occasions that the gear stick vibrated only very slightly, this didn't affect the drive at all.

I never noticed this on my GTD but is this normal?

I will take it out for a longer drive tomorrow to see if or what I can make of it and post back if its worse or happens under certain gears/driving situations.

Sorry adekil, I've no idea about the problem you're asking about but noted you have a lovely brand new today R. A few pictures of your pride and joy may not assist in the resolution of your issue, but it couldn't hurt

Are you sure you weren't driving your new R a teeny bit harder than the GTD to cause the stick to vibrate.

Congrats on your lovely new DBP R.  Pics, pics, pics......

Congrats on your shiny new R with a proper gearbox!

Mine used to vibrate on the overrun in certain gears when it was brand new. I posted up about it somewhere and a few said it was just a torque reaction from the prop shaft and others said they didn't ever experience it.
The thing is I don't think mine does it anymore. Or I've just got used to it.
I'll check in the morning.

Ah thats interesting, will look into it a bit more, i'm sure its fine. I just tend to hover my hand over the gear stick a lot so maybe I notice it more than others might.

My MK4 had this, on overrun in lower gears; gearstick would vibrate.  I was worried about it at first but after 150,000 miles it wasn't any worse, just an idiosyncrasy with the car.

Here she is. Still needs a clean but as I'm taking her away on holiday tomorrow to the coast I thought I would leave the cleaning until I get back! I will post more pictures then.
Wasn't too impress with the delivery, had bird poo on the door frame and spots of dirty all over, but was driven a fair distance from Tunbridge Wells

I noticed the vibrations again today, seems to be in the lower gears and also the gear change is awkward at times, 3rd to 4th didn't seem to always pop in smoothly and reverse as well, had to depress clutch a few times whilst in neutral and driving!!!

Car probably just needs warming up and I'm sure everything will be fine.....

Looks very smart adekil. As for gear changes, my GTI's gearbox is notchy when cold but improves when properly warmed up. It has also improved as the mileage has built, now on 10k.

Adekil:
Are we talking about gearstick vibrations you see, or feel (just making sure you're not one of those types that always has a loose hold of the gearstick, and feel it all the time).

Mine doesn't vibrate, but it does feel a little notchier than the GTD's gearbox. I did ask at the garage when it was in for service, but they didn't seem to think anything was wrong with it - not that they had another manual R to do a comparison with at any of the group garages. Maybe it's the price paid for a gearbox robust enough to have the R's power running through it?

On the very odd occasion, when slotting down from 6th to 3rd at 50mph to overtake, it is hard to slot it into 3rd - I almost feel as if i'm about to crunch the gear having to push hard on it (maybe happens once a month), but it never has crunched.

Great to see another black R on here. Also very nice to see one sporting Cadiz wheels for a change.
Prets are so common these days

Mine is also very like this. 2nd is sometimes beyond notchy - I'd call it crunching, changing up mostly. Find sometimes moving it side to side in neutral on the way through lets it go in more smoothly.  Told dealer about it twice but no fault found.  It is a bit better after 12K miles.

I can confirm that mine still vibrates a bit on the overrun (ooooerrr Missus), especially 4th gear.

I think it's less than when it was new but still apparent. I think I've just got used to it.
Possibly more characteristic than fault?
My gear change can also be a bit obstinate when cold. Again, not bad enough for me to complain about but not as slick as my GTI was.

Yes I'm one of those who loosely hover my hand over the gear stick after changing gear so I feel it

Its not constant but after a week now of driving it seems to be more when changing down to 3rd and 4th so the revs could still be a little high as it happens only for a few seconds then stops.

I have found 4th gear to be more clunky to change into especially down from 5th, I almost have to force it in at times but defo seems to improve the longer the car has been running.

The other thing I've noticed is that the standard NAV doesn't recognize postcodes, whats that all about?

I was starting to regret not getting the prets before I received the car after seeing pictures and reading reviews but I'm more than happy with the Cadiz, in my opinion they're just as nice in the flesh

Depends on the colour. I'm not a fan of the Cadiz at all, but they look a lot better on a black, red or white R than the other colours.

I was following a Lapiz 5 door R from work the other day and we both pulled into Silverlink retail park. The fella made a point to park close to my car and came over. He said he'd wished he'd got the Prets.

One thing I noticed that I liked about his. Like mine, his inner tailpipes were sooty, which meant that at a sensible distance, it looked like he only had 2 rear tailpipes (the outer ones) - makes the car a little less blingy from a distance.
