Title: Speedometer and fuel gauge problem
Post by: hardmonkeys on 16 July 2016, 20:48
Since I've replaced the loom in my cabrio,I've had a problem with the speedo not working...and the fuel gauge not settling on a position...it goes up, then sprodically drops before going back up again...I'm not too concerned about that for now, it's speedo prob that is more important at the minute, I have checked VAGCom and nothing is coming up...

Been reading about a speed sensor on top on the gearbox? Is at the back?

(http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m318/hardmonkeys/Mobile%20Uploads/image_4.jpeg) (http://s107.photobucket.com/user/hardmonkeys/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_4.jpeg.html)

If so, mine spins...from the top, if I took the connector off, then I can spin it...?

Also, on top of that isn't a 10mm bolt, so maybe it's not..any ideas??

Thanks

Maybe that speedo is the problem. I cant remeber but Im sure theres a 19mm holding the top of the sensor I. So you can spin it off and see if its still in one piece

I'll have another look later, but the only thing that seems to be holding it in, is that thing in the middle of it.. Got a bloody shed to put up today, then back to work tonight...weekend goes to quick lol

True, from what I remeber of them gearboxes that top bit should be on a thread into the bottom bit of the sensor. 19mm or 21mm I think. Youd be able to feel it

Yes, you were right,  I managed to get it off, the top bit came off, and I have a small square spindle inside,

The other bit, that the spindle went inside, was in the box...sound right? Will get pic tomorrow(later depends on which way you look at it(btw way, since my last msg I'm still up, I'm now at work on the night shift, so not only have i tried to fix the car, put a shed up and tidy the garage, I am also travelling to and delivering around London lol. Might get to bed around 6am)) i tried to remove it, but it wouldn't budge!

Sound right??

Thanks for your help

Does this look right?

There doesn't seem to be any nut/bolt holding that in, I've tried to scrape away as much muck as possible.

I've also connected a drill to the spindle and recorded the speedometer unit in the car...nothing!

Tried using the previous cluster before I did engine swap, still nothing.

Cant see in the hole but the other piece looks correct.
If its not recording maybe its f**ked. Unless it has to be in gear. Shouldnt think so though

Have you put the speedo into test mode (yet)?

If this is the test mode,

then yes, I found this on Saturday whilst having a good scout around the Internet... When driving it doesn't register anything.

End of speedo drive then?
On imgblur you want to copy the bbcode and the pics will come up instead of a link
