Title: The R Itch
Post by: benmartingolf on 16 July 2016, 16:30
Hi all,

Iv been really quiet the last few months but on here daily keeping an eye on things.

So I have had my GTI for just over a year and love it. At the moment I have a 30 mile round trip commute and I can get nearly 40 MPG which is pretty impressive. I will be moving near to where I work soon and know one of the salesmen at VW Exeter quite well. I took mine in for an annoying rattle from one of the speakers which they sorted and Giles let me take out an R.

I couldnt believe how good the traction was compared to the GTI. It has got me serious tempted for when I change next year. I'm just not sure whether to wait for the mk8, look at a M135i/S3 or if I can save up enough AMG A45.

Not sure what discounts are availabe on those cars but the R is working out at around £30K with Lapis/prets/car net/keyless/dynaudio

I got over a couple grand off my Golf R from VW Exeter.  I am still awaiting the car to be delivered.  As a side note, I have found the service to be excellent at VW Exeter.  The amount quoted for the Golf R with options on your post would have most of us tempted I suspect.  I was in the same boat as you.  On and off for the last year or more I have been tempted to take my car in and Part Ex against an R.  The temptation did wain off now and again but it kept coming back.  I was more than happy with my GTI PP  during this time, I was also waiting for news on the release of the MK8 and Facelift.  But eventually got to the point where it seemed that I could be waiting for a long time before there was any sign of either.  I know people are saying they are just around the corner and we should hear by September at Frankfurt motor show.  But this is all speculation.

I suspect if you want to get a Golf R next anyway MK7/MK8 regardless then you may as well go for the MK7 now as you could be waiting for a good few years before we see any sign of the Mk8 Golf R.  By the time you are getting bored of your MK7 R the MK8 R may be due for release.

However if there is a facelift soon then the Virtual Display (speedo etc,) could be available for the R, GTI etc,) and at a long shot there may also be a small boost in engine performance bhp, etc,. But yet again this has all been speculation

To sum up, I ended up cracking and unwittingly one sunday afternoon signed the dotted line for a MK7 Golf R even though it was not my initial intention earlier in the day.  You only live once, it is a good time to buy a Golf R and it is a cracking car.  Enjoy life while you can as long as you can afford.

I had that debate and took the jump!
Never looked back, it's rubbish on Petrol, but worth every cent extra for everything else it give you.
You won't regret it, as the post above says, you only live once!

Do it. Scratch the R itch. You won't get a better car for £30k.

@BenMartin, I'm in a similar quandary. I can't get anything to stop my itch  Although I'm about to get the pedal box to see if that helps but I just know I'll want that on the R as well  :smug:

You could be waiting for ages for the facelift / Mk8 R.

I'm not sure this time of year is the best to buy though.

One reason i would say it was a good time to buy is it will give you enough time of ownership before anything substantial comes out to replace it i.e. MK8 golf GTI or R.  We all know once you order a performance golf it takes anything between 3 to 6 months+, unless you buy one from the forecourt already built.  The speculation online is the MK8 golfs are going to start showing their faces around 2018 onward.  earlier/later depending on which article you read.

The reasons to not buy now would be the new number plate is around the corner in less than 1.5 months time.  If you place a factory order the car will be delivered during the winter.  The deals on cars are usually not so good this time of year.

But you already have worked out a quote which looks good, You have the itch which is not going to go away anytime soon.  If you leave it too long the MK8's will be closer and You will then either have to buy a MK7 with the knowledge a new Mk8 range performance golf GTI etc, is being released or wait much longer before buying a MK8 Golf R. (the Golf R Mk8 could be 2020 onward going by historic timescales of releases).

As stated earlier, I was in the same situation as you, But I scratched the itch and went ahead to order a Golf R....  Go on do it, you know you want to

One thing to bear in mind is that if you're part exchanging your P/X value will also likely to be lower in winter as the market slows significantly. So it's swings and roundabouts on deals. Obviously at this time of year there will be less headline discounts and less from VW in handouts but if your dealer is chasing bonuses then deals could be forthcoming.
If part exchanging the headline discount isn't that important, it's the actual cost to change.

After lots of deliberation, which came down to 4 cars (A3 Quattro, GTI, Tiguan and R) knew that choosing anything but the R would have me kicking myself, and thats not that my GTD or the other three left on that list are not great cars in own right, its just the R is that and a little more.

If did not scratch that itch I would be driving something else kicking myself that had not followed heart and selected the R.

The feeling that have at moment , is that the feeling that have when drive the R will justify the selection each and every time. Have it in the GTD! but with one piece missing
