Title: Clubsport - Ireland
Post by: Damion on 03 July 2016, 20:05
Launched last week:

Pleased I didn't order one, wheels not the best, but it's the price, €500/£400 cheaper than the R in all forms, starting price €43k!
I'm delighted my €500 for the extra bhp and 4motion was well spent.

Agreed Damion, I think you made the right choice. The price differential between the 2 is crazy. The R is a far better package imo.
I'd like to see the full specs though / the product guide, see what they're charging for the nice seats or better wheels. But the Irish configurator is still hopelessly out of date.

Far better is probably a bit of a stretch, the most important part (ie. the engine) is the same in both cars. One is an AWD cruising oriented hatch, the other is a FWD driver's car (lsd, stiffer suspension) with several bespoke elements (bodykit, bucket seats). One justifies its price by numbers (4 driven wheels, 300bhp, 0-60 sub 5") the other one by qualitative factors (involvement, feed-back, tossability), coupled with the fact the R is greatly understated looks-wise it will appeal to a much bigger everyday audience. The Clubsport being a special, focused variant will appeal to people who know why they would be after such a car in the first place. Yes technically/financially it probably won't make sense but that won't matter to them.

In any case 43k eur is a whole lot of money for either of them, I see 37-38K eur as the max justifiable catalog price for any fully loaded Golf, 2, 4 or 6WD regardless.

In Belgium, the Clubsport price is very close to the GTI PP. But bucket seats are optional.
in any case, the clubsport is considerable cheaper than the R.
