Title: Puncture
Post by: phil_790 on 02 July 2016, 20:58
Hi all,

It's been a while since I posted, but I am away this weekend and got a puncture towards the edge of my factory fit bridgestones on the rear passenger side. I don't know if it can be repaired, if the tyre needs replacing and I can't get another potenza, should I replace both tears or is it alright to get one done. The car is a pp gti wit about 5500miles so there is quite a bit of life left in them...

Cheers,
Phil

Why not use the foam for a couple of days so you can find the right tyre....good luck

At the moment it doesn't seem to have dropped pressure and it didn't bubble up when I put some liquid on it. I only noticed the head of the screw in the sunshine. Have got a 100mile drive home tomorrow and can't really do that on the space saver :-( what a pain!

How close to the sidewall is the puncture?   Replacing just the one tyre will be fine.

I would take the chance and try getting home before getting the tyre looked at, just reduce your speed a little.

It's just in the edge of the outer most groove, hopefully can be repaired. If I can't get a Bridgestone will it be ok to have a different tyre, I don't really want to skimp on cost, but it would be waste to replace both.

It's not ideal to have a newer tire on one corner but it's not the end of the world.

The car will be making corners all the time as that non-Bridgestone replacement will undoubtedly have far more grip than the other 3 tyres.

If it is that close to the edge then it should not be repaired. I would always fit tyres in pairs, there could be a significant difference in grip across the axle even with a new and part worn tyre of the same compound.

I'm probably being a bit dense here but you say it's a puncture but it's not losing air nor bubbling when covered in liquid. So how is it a puncture? Just take it to a reliable garage for an assessment.

LOL.... so true!

Pretty much any other decent make will have more grip than the bridgestones. As discussed in other threads I'm loving the Michelin PS4s since I got them on the fronts a few months ago. I had a puncture in a similar location, and was also really looking for an excuse to ditch the bridgestones (although I could have done without spending the money though).

It was a pretty big screw in the very last tread block which started to hiss when moved. It was right at the edge of what could have been considered a safe repair, so I went down the route of 2 new rear tyres as I thought that whatever was put on would be pretty different to the BS ones. I was not too keen on having something which much better grip on one side than the other.

I don’t have much luck with tyre work, on my first MK7 GTI, when replacing tyres and doing the alignment, a place badly scratched one alloy which needed a full refurb and whilst doing the alignment, they used the parameters for a MK6 as they didn’t have the ones for a MK7 (but they didn’t think to mention this until I got home and read the paperwork and called them back!) Also a few years ago a place didn’t properly balance the wheel until I returned and asked if it had been done!

So that fact that the 2 tyres have been replaced, wheels haven’t been scratched, seem to be correctly balanced and the alignment wasn’t touched, it wasn’t too much of a disaster other than a few ££££

Still a shame that on the Golf (or pretty much any car these days) there isn’t an option for an OEM full size spare, which would have meant I wouldn’t have needed to have got it done immediately! I did noticed on the configurator the other day that it is an option on the Passatt.

Cheers.

What tyres did you end up going for in the end? (unless I've not read correctly and completely missed you saying!).

I hope you kept the other tyre so that you can sell it rather than paying the garage to dispose of it.

Hi,

Have kept the old tyre, threw it in the back of the garage and keep it just in case, tbh I can't really be bothered with trying to eBay it.

Went with the Michelin ps4, seems to get a good review, either way they will be better than the BS ones.
