Hi all, first post and looking for a little advice.
I'm looking to get my fist VW Gti and have been looking at Mk5's but I found a high mileage (120k) Mk6 GTi DSG with a decent spec in my price range, my issue is how are the engines? I've heard good things from local guys about the Mk5's with mileage, but they haven't a clue on the Mk6 engine. Is it worth dropping the money on the Mk6 or should I focus on a lower mileage Mk5?
Thanks in advance

My concern with buying a high mileage car is, if it's done 120k now, how many will it have done by the time you come to sell it? A GTI with 150k+ is going to take some selling, unless it's really cheap.

Plan would be to have the car for at least 5 years, if not more. It's an ex police vehicle, so I'd imagine it's been well looked after.

Apprently they do, http://www.drivelinesportsandperformance.co.uk/used-cars/volkswagen-golf-2-0-tsi-gti-dsg-3dr-birmingham-201605244266625
I'm very tempted to go for it, just need to find a local DSG to test drive to see if I can get on with it.

Personally I'd be wary with this one pal.....
.....Even if unmarked, there aren't many police cars which are 3-doors
Good luck

Actually a fair point I hadn't considered, I'll give them a call tomorrow and ask what proof of prior ownership. Could well have been a personal vehicle kitted out with the blues and twos though.

Defo check it out pal.
Also......we know that the feds have unmarked high-performance cars (again usually 5-door so to drag the naughty one in the back) but surely these high-performance vehicles would be manual transmission...? Not entirely sure so I stand to be corrected, but my thought is that I wouldn't want to chase a yobbo with 200, 250 or 300 bhp with a auto or dsg, ha !

I'd also be concerned about wear and tear on high mileage car. Like creaky suspension, damage/wear to steering wheel etc :/
-
Looks like the general consensus will be to avoid it :/ Shame as I loved the look of the car, I might try and nudge my budget higher then to get a Mk6 at a more respectable mileage..
-
Yeh I think you can get a decent mk6 gti for £9.5k and the interior is a big step up from a mk5 gti
I was actually looking at a mk5 gti but when I saw a mk6 gti I had to get it. It meant I had to increase my budget but it was the right choice and I'm happy I spent that bit more for the newer gti

Yup, I think it'll have to be, fallen in love with it a little bit! Trying to find one at a dealership near me! Everything is 100+ miles away, bit of a pain when I want to test one.

Just don't rush it and you've got a lot of people on this forum who are happy to help if you have any questions :)

120k miles is alot, again why not a 5 door? and again the wheels arent std mk6 wheels there the mk7 wheels arent they? somethign like this the pol wouldnt be changing so?
-
Huh, the next thing they'll be using bulldogs as police dogs!

The standard wheels were probably kerbed beyond repair. The dealer would have fitted the set of Mk7 reps as the cheaper option. Also it looks like he's fitted an aftermarket radio to fill the gap in the dash left by plods gadgets.

There's a White MK6 Golf GTi that's an unmarked police car used here in Norwich. I've driven past it a few times & had to do a double take as I thought I was imagining it at first.
The car you've linked to does look tidy, but it's probably not had an easy life at all, so possibly best to wait for another one to come along as others have suggested.
As for distance, I traveled 100+ miles to get mine & had to drive it out of London (something I've never done before), so try not to be put off by distance. If it's the right one, distance shouldn't matter, and if you speak to most dealers, they are sometimes happy to cover costs, one was even prepared to cover my travel, hotel & show me around the city. I was very impressed with the service I received from the London dealers & I wouldn't hesitate to purchase from them again. Next time I'm hoping I'll be shopping for an R.
Best of luck in your search bud!

It's not impossible that they'd use a 3 door though, there were some escort cosworth panda cars and I've seen a mk2 focus rs police car pull someone up in Yorkshire.

That's interesting to know. I had a white GTi trying to provoke me into a race recently.....
I too have a white GTi

Given some of the replies here, I'm going to pass up on this one I reckon. I'll keep an eye out, but I've seen a few nice Ed30 MkV's around for around the same price, will probably get myself one of those.

Ha! I have a white GTi too! :)
It was going the opposite way to me down Ipswich Road when I first saw it, then I saw it again a few weeks later going down Colman Road. Haven't seen it for a while now, but my working hours have changed so that could be why.
EDIT: As if by magic I saw an unmarked MK6 white police car yesterday near Sprowston, it's no longer a GTi though & is now a GTD :D
