Title: High Beam assist.
Post by: SCOTTE on 05 June 2016, 20:56
Hi Guys, just wondering if it is worth adding High beam assist to my list? do many of you have it? How does it work exactly?

Looking forward to your replies.

Thanks

I have it, love it.

It works by enabling it (each time you start the car...) by flicking the right stalk like you would to put high beam up.

Then after you hit 35mph (or there abouts) it activates and dips whenever it needs to.

Nice and lazy.

Of course its not perfect, but after a while you just don't care :D

The better solution is the dynamic lighting system that you get with lane assist - I would choose that next time.

HBA is well worth it, it's only cheap to add.

I had it on my last BMW and had to have it on my GTD, I live in the sticks so it's used a lot

Dunno about the 35mph bit though, I'm sure mine works at lower speeds

Would not get it again. The 37mph limit means its not useable a lot of the time ans when it is working it flicks the beam about half a second later than you would manually - so its just annoying!

I have it and would definitely spec it again.  Works very well, surprisingly accurate.  I do a lot of driving along rural roads so it is very useful feature for me, just flick it on and that's it, it does all the dipping, main beam for you. No need for touching the stalk after that.  To activate it (with lights on of course) you simply push the indicator stalk back towards the dash and a headlight symbol with letter A in it, comes up in the DIS just underneath the time.  To deactivate just pull the stalk forwards.  It's very good price for what it does, I love it.

I find it works well but it hasn't yet learned to flash muppets with their front fog lights on.

Go for dynamic high beam, it's amazing! You need to get the lane assist pack to get it but I think it's worth it.

Exactly my experience with it.  The slight delay in switching the beam off is enough to get other drivers to start flashing at you.  It was a fairly cheap option but I still don't think I would spec it again.

I've got it and I've not the foggiest how to use it. It's relatively cheap I suppose so if you live in the sticks its probably worth the outlay.

I've been using it for just over 3 years on my CC and I have never been flashed. I agree about the delay in the time that you would dip the lights yourself and when it does it but you get used to it. I wouldn't be without it now but I think that active high beam is miles better, obviously.

I have this in the R and I've found it works very well. That said it's ages since I drove anywhere much at night. Sure it's still bright up to 10pm these evenings

Only me that did not spec it again then!  To be fair, as its a cheap option, its probably best to take it and then decide for yourself.

Something I found out when I had it is that it only works when you select auto lights so if you want to revert to the old fashioned manual stalk turn the headlight switch to the headlights on position.

I recently ticked virtually all boxes on the options list for my Golf R, but High Beam Assist was one of the options I did not.  So You are not the only one mate.

I suspect it might be a good option to have, but felt in my neck of the woods, the type of driving and time of day I would be driving, it would not be used very much.

I just leave my lights on auto... works just fine except for one condition - daytime fog - when the light level sensor is fooled by the white fog...

So, really, first world problems :D

Me too - lights always on auto.  Currently in a courtesy car (Skoda Fabia) and have to remind myself to switch the lights on as doesn't have an auto setting.
