Quite like that render - looks cute but not at £15k plus

I ran an Abarth 500 as my daily in 2014   :nerd:

Great little hot hatch with the sound, looks and performance - sorry but the proposed UP GTI is no match, latest Mini Cooper is not much £more and is brilliant fun with a 0.62 in 7.9  - cracking 3 cylinder 1.5 turbo, going to miss mine when my lad takes it over

I think it looks great with decent discount might be interested. Small cars suit the tight rural roads in Cornwall . Not too bothered it is not as quick as some, it's the style I like .

That amount of power with the GTI badge is a joke -the Ye Olde Lupo GTI outdoes this, and tiny displacement engines tuned for performance (like Ford's little 1 litre ecoboost) are not frugal in real life driving. For example, my wife's Audi A1 1.6TDI is barely more economical than my old MK7 GTD on a long run cruising at 80mph, and the GTD engine is pulling along 200kg more weight (or about 15% when you factor in 2 average occupants).

If it has 113PS, call it a GT, not a GTI.

They've recently completely discontinued the UP here in Ireland. No interest in it at all bar the car rental market.

I just had a look at the Up car van derivative!

2 seats, and caged back - quirkey!

Exactly. GT would be much more appropriate given the modest power and performance, we are not in 1980's I believe. VW have quite a legendary badge in the GTI that should be carefully thought on which car it deserves putting on.

I should imagine there are reasons for the power output . It likely a compromise to ensure reliability and fuel efficiency. I think it's respectable power but a bit more would be nice. It's only an Up and divin at speed I would rather be in something a bit more substantial.

On paper it's not a lot of power but it has respectable torque for its weight meaning you could carry passengers without it needing a push to get it up steep hills.
It would always be a niche car a bit like the Lupo GTI (which sold in small numbers yet is very sought after now) and like Steve says, it's not about outright speed, more the fun factor. It would be great fun around the West Country lanes and just as much fun in city centres and other places where you're not going to get up to huge speeds. It's for places that you want to be able to get through small gaps and go around bends in a way lardy Golfs can't nowadays.
A bit of fun to put a smile on your face not an adrenaline thrill ride like a Civic Type R.

Then there's the fact it has a turbo engine - which means it can be extended a little bit in the fun factor with a small amount of electronic modification.

Yeah, I'd consider one.

Exonian was partly why I started the thread as I knew it was the sort of car he would find fun from reading other threads.

Good find though Brendan, It'd be great if VW put it into production. Proper little go-kart.

It has almost exactly the same power and weight as a 1984 MKII. That was a fun car at the time but it would be frustrating nowadays being out-dragged by diesels.

Unpowerful cars that handle well and give good feedback can be brilliant fun, my old 106 1.1 after I fitted yokohama tyres and a momo steering wheel it was brilliant fun with only 65, 70 ish bhp

Indeed! I ran an old Polo GT (75bhp but weighed nothing) for years complete with a momo steering wheel as a second car. It was brilliant for throwing around and fitted through tiny gaps. You could park it anywhere due to its size and it'd still hold its own on a motorway if needed.
Years before that I had a Polo G40 which is still one of my 'most fun' cars I've ever owned, and I've owned quite a lot of cars. A Lupo GTI I had on loan is also one of the biggest smile inducing cars I've ever driven. Hardly anybody bought them as they were expensive and not as powerful as other hot hatches yet they drove brilliantly and had lots of unique features. If an up! GTI was anything like as good as a Lupo GTI then I'd want one in a flash.

i'd be so up! for one of these as they are great little cars with a proper driving position

clubsport s version would be even better as bigger boot to hoot

If you can make it dance, it will sell.
