Hi all I posted in Dec 2015 about a funny smell coming into the cabin of my Gti it is at its worst when you leave the car overnight and get in in the morning it is a musty smokey smell . The car has been back twice to the main dealer here in a Jersey and they cannot find the cause . I spoke to the service manager last week he got into the car and said yes the smell was bad and said there was damp getting in somewhere.there is no sign of water or damp anywhere in the cabin and the car is going in next week to be looked at again . The car is kept indoors so is stored dry . Has anybody else out there had any similar problems as it is somewhat of an ongoing saga .

Air con system is a classic cause of this. Remedy is a fumigation "bomb" in the cabin, with the air con on recirc. Has that been done?

Definitely try the above for the sake of a tenner and dead easy to do.

I'd also put a new cabin/pollen filter in, try this one?

Air con was done first time the car went in

You get a fair bit of water come in if you've driven in the rain and open the window or the door...
If you know anyone with a caravan or a grain farmer, borrow a damp meter.. you could easily find you have got damp carpets...
Try some of those silica gel packs - you can get big ones for cars from ebay. They should dry it out.

I used to get this last year in my then Golf R - strange thing was the weather condtions varied and the smell would still appear. I was going to try and get to the bottom of it but it stopped the beginning of this year before I chopped it in for the AMG.
I knew of a few colleagues with mk7 Golfs who had this - though not all performance models. Again it seemed to come and go. Very strange not what you want on a new car that's for sure. Hope you get it sorted with your dealer

Have you checked the boot floor under the spare?

Ah, that hatch hinge seal thing? Seen a couple of cases of that on forums. Hinge not sealed properly and water leaks into the boot. Another one on here was a leak via the fuel filler cavity, because of a blocked drain from that cavity.
