Hi all,
Recently fitted a Weber and all was going so well, until today. The old Pierburg carb used to have a few over run issues, but today I had the same over run with many many backfires.
Fitted the Weber about 2 weeks ago and have done 800 miles since, but today the revs went a bit potty when I was driving, hitting 3k when I was standing. Turned the ignition off and the over run was back, even worse than before, it went on for absolute ages which was hard to watch..
What's going on? I honestly can't get my head round it.

Normally carbon build up in the bores. You pulled a plugg to see how black they are bud?

Just pulled all the plugs and had a check, they were quite the opposite actually, very white haha

Burning lean... Hmm. If you stall it, does it shut off properly.
My last carbed one did it. It also set fire to the webber. But when I whippes the head off the build up on the pistons was quite abit.
Theres something you can get that is suppose to clear the cylinders but the name escapes me

Drove her to work this morning and it drove real nice, haven't had the chance to stall her yet! Will do on my lunch break.
The bit where you mentioned the fire, I didn't like the sound of that haha Hooefully that doesn't happen again!
I did actually buy another Mk2 engine at the weekend, cost £85 with absolute loads of parts still fitted and in good condition, so the idea was to completely strip that down and give it a good old service!
The engine was incredibly heavy haha I had to drive 100 mile back home with my girlfriend and a car full of camping equipment and the Golf ran pretty well lol
Don't think I'd ever recommend doing that however.. It was a slow drive home!

Yeh it wasnt a good day. Although someone did stop to tell me that my engine was on fire. Not that ide have known that

Haha amazing, really don't like the sound of that happening however!
Do you know if it's possible to fit a fuel pump which isn't mechanical? My fuel pump has been leaking oil from the base for around 2 weeks now. Changed all the gaskets, O rings, fuel pump, even used high temp gasket paper and liquid gasket maker, no luck :/

I have fitted before a faset electrical bump. Wired it to a spare foglight switch I had.
I dont like mechanical pumps. That may have contributed to overrun/fire.
Think mine was a rare case. Cant even remeber what a carbd engine looks like. Thus golfs got a abs engine out of a mk3 for a unknown reason
