Right, now the car has the Discover Nav Pro MIB II and the full suite of app connect (android auto, Apple Car play and mirror link), as well as car-net, I thought I'd give them a check.
(excuse the image quality, it was really sunny and the lens on the phone was flaring quite badly).

All features worked straight out of the box first time using my Iphone 6 for Apple Car Play and Car-Net, and my Samsung Galaxy S5 for Android Auto, Mirror-Link and Car-Net.
Quite a relief really hearing some of the horror stories of people trying to get these apps working.
All in all, a bit gimmicky (some of them), but pretty cool all the same !

My big question is if the CarNet traffic data is better than bloody TMC.
Any thoughts on that?

This is really helpful and great to see and hear that so seamless.
Having not selected Sat Nav in my upcoming R as was hoping the I Phone maps would suffice via App-Connect would it be possible to have a check of the navigation via I Phone?
At present think Apple have not allowed Google Maps so it will be the Apple Maps.
Use Sat Nav so little that it really does just have to be functional and get me close in reality! hence was not prepared to pay the near £700 which pays for the Pretoria near enough.
Thought the MIB 1 was clunky and slow, so
1. Is it faster?
2. Any real changes in the UI
3. With all this additional connectivity the SD card and CD player maybe now redundant?
4. Do you use music streaming? Use Deezer myself and believe that connects, but be interesting to see how other streaming services connect/perform
5. Is that the new 6 inch screen? better quality, just better?
The MIB 1 was probably the only thing that can really point at as disliking so glad this is being addressed.
PS: Be interesting to see how the new GTD stacks up against previous as yours was 1st generation and like me bought without too much detail available. It might just be exactly the same! but be good to hear how compares anyway

Sootchuckers screen is the pro Nav 8" screen.
Be very careful if ordering / buying any Golf that doesn't have App Connect activated from the factory and assuming it can be retro activated. Not all MIB 2 units are compatible.
If you spec Discover Nav Pro, it's activated from the factory.
If you spec Discover Nav, you need to spec App connect separately OR you could get it activated by the dealers after delivery.
If you spec no Nav, then you must spec App connect from factory as there's a real possibility you won't be able to retro activate it. It seems VW fit MIB 2 units to some cars that cannot have app connect activated. The pattern seems to be if the car has the Rear camera, then it'll get the upgradable MIB 2. Otherwise no.

Have ordered the App-Connect so can get Sat Nav via the I Phone as well as music, texts etc and and have also ordered the Camera as well so should be well covered :)
So be interested to see how the Apple Maps perform via the App-Connect (Hope Apple relent and let Google Maps be compatible to)
Did not realise sootchucker was the Pro so still be interested to see if the standard MIB 2 is quicker and with better screen.

Just looked at my order and it says "Car-Net App-Connect"
Does that mean I get the Car-Net features you demonstrating also? Or is there more on top of that required to have that function?
-
Yes you'll have all that car net stuff too. Most of it is gimmicky tbh.
I have the smaller screen and it's definitely a lot faster / slicker to use than the old MIB 1. Apple maps seems ok too the few times I've tried it.

Thank you as had no idea that was included though its more handy than essential.
Presume the Car-Net aspect connects via your phone also and uses your data then?
Running I Phone 5 at present and so intend to be at I Phone 7 for about when car arrives, so will be looking at more data focused bundles as only on 1 GB bundle at moment though suspect that not use too much data anyway as main drain on data would be music and tend to download a bundle of songs to my device for my music streaming service (Use Deezer 100% time, never use my I Tunes.)
As for Sat Nav, that statement alone is assurance enough given how rarely use, as long as functional and as good as my phone then perfect for me and good choice in not ticking that option.
-
Yeah it'll use either your mobile data or your wifi if you park in your driveway! But as I said, there's not much worth bothering about in car net. Weather, news headlines... All that stuff is easier to access on the phone itself.
Obviously Apple maps will use your data too. Spotify / Apple Music likewise unless you cache the music on the phone for offline use.
The google street view you see on Sootchuckers is pro Nav only.

Only had the car a few days so no time for any real testing, but here are my initial thoughts anyway in answer to your questions
1. It is quicker (I think) but not by much as I already came from a Nav Pro so that already had the faster processor and more memory than the smaller unit, but yes, it does feel a little snappier (especially when switching from one screen to the next). Start up times from cold seem about the same.
2. UI wise, there are a few. Fonts are different (and slightly smaller) on the Media screens, allowing more of the track title/artist to be shown and just looks a bit neater. Radio wise, the DAB and FM logos are now automatically downloaded over the air and show correctly in full size when on the station information screen (this never worked on MIB I). The "CAR" menus now has additional "Think Blue" screen (naff), and I have coded in the Off Road screen (in the absence so far of the performance screen that the MY17 cars are getting).
Also, one big and welcome change is that rather than pressing the CAR button then having to press the small menu button in the lower left hand side of the screen to switch between screens (car status, journey stats etc.) you can now just keep pressing the CAR button and it will cycle through all the screens available which is much quicker and safer. There are many other small changes that just add up so a better experience overall.
3. I still use my two SD cards for most of my music as they take no power, no data and are always available without having to hook the phone up (or playing via bluetooth). Also with two cards there's a massive capacity as well. On mine it's a CD / DVD player and I quite often find myself (when waiting for the wife at the train station when she goes on meetings), watching a DVD in car
4. Not used it myself (as most of my music is on SD cards) but might be something I'll try in future with either Deezer or Spotify?
5. I'm sure the new 6.5 screen will be leaps and bounds better than the older 5.8" screen as it now has the resolution of the Nav Pro.
-
These menus and apps look great. I've specced a Nav Pro unit in mine mainly for the larger screen but no idea it had all those features, I guess this should give your passenger a full-time job, lol.
What is the maximum SD card supported capacity and file format? (FAT, NTFS)
-
I've been using a 32GB Sandisk class 10 SDHC card since I got my car and it's quite glitchy.
It's easily confused and freezes up if it doesn't like the command you've given it.
I formatted an old 4GB usb stick to FAT32 today and it plays my music files no problem so I'll see how that goes reliabilty wise.

Do you still get the 10Gb hard drive?

Yep, although I've not used the internal hard drive since my RNS-510 days on the MK5 Golf.

Isn't that a 60gb ssd or thereabouts with 10gb being accessible from the user for music storage? Talking about the Discover Pro

Yeah I've just checked. 64Gb but that must be for the Nav system as only 10Gb is available to the user.

I wonder whether you can unlock more space for music. Surely the maps can't be more than 10-15gb. I got an IT buddie that said he'd like to take a look at this QNX O/S and see what "options" might be available for playing with...

Thank you sir! from reading this and your other post, pretty convinced that this minor irritant that is the MIB 1 will maybe become pleasurable with the improvements and additional App-Connect alongside being able to add 2 phones. What did note the most was that the screen resolution of standard unit is to match the Pro! yes! as its pretty grainy and poor at present so much needed uplift.
Have you had to upload the DAB station Icons? Only one station automatically picks up the logo and thats Heart, the rest including all the BBC use my uploaded logos and on full screen they remain small. Was hoping this would be improved somehow? Any thoughts on the DAB?

Hmm, it's taken me a week, but I have found something that's worse with MIB II that the older model.
Firstly, whilst I do prefer having a proper USB socket rather than a proprietary MDI socket (for the ease of swapping phones and units over via their default cable), one of the advantages of the MDI socket what that when I connected my Ipod touch (with the lightning connector), all my music videos and movies on the Ipod would play through the screen. I think that's because the MDI socket contained the electronics and licencing from Apple for it to work, but the USB socket appears to be just that - a USB socket with no digital rights authorisation. Looks like I'm going to have to rip all my videos and port across to one of the SD cards
I've also noticed when playing a video from an SD card, whilst it plays fine, the image is very dark (the shadows are pure black), and there doesn't seem to be an option to adjust brightness, contrast and colour like on the earlier unit ?
I suppose with all the improvements, something had to give ?

NavPro MIB1 had USB from quite a while back - mine was delivered in March 2014 and its got USB - no MDI for me.
