Title: someone tell me whats wrong with my car!

can anyone help? my mk3 2litre16v is making some weird rapid "ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch" noises and when its making the noise the brake pedal won't go down and i can feel a vibration (same as  the noise) through the pedal. it seems like an abs problem but has anyone else had this or do they know what it might be? any help would be great as its well scary when you come to brake and all youve got is a rock hard pedal and a load of ch-ch-chs!

Sounds like you have a sensor problem on your ABS mate. The only way to get it fixed is in the garage i expect .  :-\

Get them to read the fault codes from the ecu , and check the read out of the wheel sensors . (i know VAG-COM can do this)

Had a look , the system needs to bew able to read from module 3 . You need to do the test on the road or on a rolling road . I expect you will find that one of the sensors is showing 0 mph all the time .

I think something is wrong with the servo as well, maybe a leak? check the vacuum hose.

where can i find the sensors that you are talking about?
is there a sensor on each wheel?
im hoping that it may just be a sensor conection breaking down as the problem is only intermittent.

Check the vacuum hose on the servo for security, also check the brake pedal positioner which is also mounted on the servo. I think if the pedal is rock hard then the servo is probably the problem, maybe a leak?

Sounds like the abs sensors.  I've had my '97 Mk 8v since new, and the only two things to ever go wrong with it were abs brake sensors.  You problem sounds exactly like what I went through.  Good luck.

If the abs sensors are faulty then that would not make the pedal go rock hard, the only thing that does that is the servo not working properly.
