Title: Would I be mad to?
Post by: Cossieian on 07 May 2016, 11:10
Just off the phone with my dealer, he can offer me the following new factory order for £1k and my car, monthlies will go up £10, would I be mad to change or does it sound ok?
3 Door
DSG
Tornado Red
19 Prets
Winter Pack
High Beam Assist
Rear View Camera
Apple Car Play
Gloss Black Mirrors
3 Year service Pack

I will gain 19 Prets, high Beam, Camera and Apple car play over my current car, but will obviously lose Keyless as no longer available.
Decisions, Decisions

Sounds very similar to offer to had to replace my GTI with the same car. The deposit and loyalty contributions make things very interesting.  I ended up loosing the plot and ordered an R 😉

App Connect / CarPlay can be retro-activated on your current car. Assuming it's MIB 2?
You already have prets don't you?

I'd hate to lose keyless personally...

You've already got a set of Prets though?  Seems a bit mad to me but ETTO!

Not quite sure why you are asking for opinions as you already know that you're going to do it
You could sell your Prets very easily I'm sure.

Yes 2 sets were just OK Becs, 1 set was or as good as.
I'm too fussy sometimes it even annoys me.
I'm tempted to pay the £1k just for something to look forward to, if I don't have the postman arriving at least 3 times a week I'm not happy

Lol.

Well I can't say I never buy stuff for the sake of it myself, as my detailing cupboard attests to, and the fact my daughter thinks the postman/courier guy is a member of the family, lol.  But when it comes to a car I personally like to hang onto it for a few years - 3 or 4 and really own it and get to know it intimately, and of course lavish all my detailing attention on it. Changing cars every few months is too transient for me.  I can sort of understand someone swapping early for another totally different car bit for one almost identical? Still, we are all different and if you can afford it, you should do what makes you happy. Life is short and you can't take it with you!

No it's a factory order.
I do love Lapiz but their everywhere, I do love black with Prets but not sure the Pearl Bkack is still an option now? Yes I would and should order a different colour but can't decide which one

I got a set of prets last December when I ordered the GTD estate as 19" are not an option on the estate GTD

I sold them earlier in the week when we bought the Audi for £1200 and they were mint condition.

Does anyone know why there is no keyless on the 3 door?

I must say the lack of Keykess is a big factor in my decision!!

Been chatting with my alarm guy he says thefts of keyless entry vehicles is up on normal keyed vehicles obviously desired motors but none the the less I'm glad keyless and push button Starr is no longer available on 2016 gti's

App connect is a lot more than 100 quid if you want to add it after.

Forget the high beam assist and get the lane assist, this includes dynamic headlights which are brilliant, especially on country roads.

I don't mean to sound ignorant but I don't care a less about thefts, at the end if the day if someone wants something bad enough they will take it off you no matter what! What really annoys me is that it's still available on the 5 door...I just don't understand it at all

Does anyone know if the newer model Rs are being built with any upgrades etc or is it as they are ATM

I'm going to take the opposite stand point and think Ian would be the winner of its just £1000.

You get a newer car with the £900 wheel upgrade and the MY17 changes which means those childishly fun gauges in the head unit.
All you lose is keyless, and exactly how hard is it to fish a key out of your pocket?

The only change I'd make would be to possibly get a different colour. Or if my pockets really were that inaccessible I'd get a five door and keyless.
Personally I think the GTI looks better in 3 door and the R looks better in 5 door but that's neither here nor there.

No, if I was on PCP myself I'd do exactly the same right now myself.
I'd happily pay £1000 to get a new car with a set of Prets, the ability to get my phone nav up on the radio screen and those childishly fun gauges!
Sorry.

PS. I think I know where your wife was coming from with the revelation she expected it sooner as indeed you did drop a few hints yourself.
Go for it, I would!!

Andy what are the extra gauges? Is there any other upgrades new Rs are getting now?
Ref colour, my wife and I chatted about this today and we both just love Tornado Red, I would prefer it to be a different colour but i can't help what I like :embarrassed:

BTW Craig my car is 6 months old now, but will be about 9-10 months old when new one arrives, so practically a classic
Title: Re: Would I be mad to?

Red looks great on the R, especially with black mirrors (and dark wheels!)

Evo1986 started a thread with the model year changes back along.
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=277500.0  As far as the R/GTI/D is concerned it was the digital boost gauge, g-meter and lap timer that is of interest to those of a childish mentality (like me!) plus there's an increase in price for the rear camera and the sad passing of the much missed glove box lock (that I've never met anybody who's used it).

Ian, it gets the boost pressure gauge, lap timer etc, loses the lock on the gloves and gets frameless rear view mirror.  That's it, the boost gauges are nifty but otherwise not much to shout about in terms of upgrades.

In all honestly I think you are absolutely nuts to chop yours in for an almost identical car - losing keyless, which is brilliant, and gaining very little. But your car and your money so enjoy.

I kind of agree with this (bar the 3/5 door remark since clearly 3 door always looks better ) but the only thing is it's not really just £1000 + £10 extra a month but it will also be the up to 10 pcp payments made on the existing car so £3-4k depending on the monthlies. That's how I'd view it.

I was going on the assumption that young Ian would be planning his next car 45 mins after taking delivery of 'Red R #2" therefore the PCP's are an ongoing thing in a never ending cycle.
I don't think there will ever be a forever car to settle down with, so the PCP's just roll over.
I've never tried a PCP so am not overly familiar with their machinations other from what I've digested on here.

I know cars are just hunks of metal but I get seriously attached to mine, so the idea of just swapping it out all the time is a complete mystery to me. Just buy something you really like already!!
Another thing, 3 door Golfs just look weird. Just buy a  Scirocco

Sounds like you have me summed up Andy ha ha ha.
As much as I love my cars, and trust me I do, cars are my life. I just don't get attached to them. I find the thrill of the chase and always having something round the corner to look forward to keeps me going! Life is way way to short and as I've always said if it's affordable and comfortably within my means I just do it.

I'm a bit/lot like Ian and tend to have a fast turnaround of both bits and cars. The only cars I become attached to are my old runabouts which I generally keep until they fall apart.
Ideally I should work in a car dealers and just drive something different every few months then I'd cease to care even less! Maybe I'll consider it as yet again my work seem to be looking at pulling my grade so I'll have to drop down into a lower pay band job, it happens every few years as support staff are generally easier targets than operational staff. Time for something new maybe (once they've 'bought' my job off me with a ridiculous offer). I fancy working for myself but have no useful skills!
I quite fancy a Scirocco myself btw, came close a few times but never close enough.
There are just too many interesting cars on the market so I'd never settle for just being happy with one car once I'd fiddled about with it for a while. It's a good job I'm not like that with women or I'd have nowhere to live, no money and no pension several times over  :lipsrsealed:

Don't worry, I understand fully!
I've always been much the same; buy one, do a few bits to it, sell it, rinse, repeat.

Workmates have long since tired of asking "why'd you change cars again, what was wrong with the last one?"
"Nothing, I just felt like it"  :embarrassed:

One of them actually said that if the quote I've been given is legit then to go and buy it, it's a unbelievably good deal. He actually looked confused as fook as to how they were doing it  Think I'll call tomorrow and make it happen
