Title: Stuck cover
Post by: vw spur on 02 May 2016, 17:58
Has anyone had any issues with the cover which goes over the old ashtray/USB cubby hole?? The cover on mine refuses to open, bit of a pain as The phone lead is in there as well.

Do I have to take it back to the dealer I got the car from or can I go to my nearest dealer?? It's a 90 mile round trip to the dealer I bought it from.

The car is only 3 weeks old if that makes any difference

Mine occasionally sticks when I've got my iPhone 5 connected with a pretty long lead, I tend to give it a good pull open and it'll come free. I was a wee bit concerned I'd break it but I've had to do it two or three times and it seems to work fine still.  I am pretty careful to make sure the phone and lead are well down at the bottom of the cubby hole, or leave it open when the phone's connected.

Give it a yank, what's the worst that can happen?

Do you not push it in to release it?

To the OP you can take it to any VW dealer as your warranty is with VW

Yeah this has happened to mine a few times too. It's just the cable getting caught in the hinge mechanism. It's no big deal, just gently prise it open and try to make sure that the cable is clear of the hinge when closing it again.
It's a poor enough design anyway imo, fiddly in the extreme. I'd much prefer if they'd put the USB socket where the cup holders are or even in the armrest.

You need to push it in to open.

If still sticks push in first then yank.  But if it's happening all the time, take it to the dealer.

I had this issue a couple of times but managed to get it open with a spot of panicky brute force.

I ended up ordering a 10cm Amazon Basics lightning cable for my IPhone. It stops the problem of the long cable getting stuck in the mechanism and it's generally a lot neater and easier to plug your phone in and shut the door.

Mine occasionally gets stuck shut even  with a 10cm lightning cable snagging the cover.

After a mild panic to get it open again I try to remember to check the cable each time but I soon forget to do this ....

Not the best design.

It's happened a couple of times on mine but it seems to be due to the Lightning cable snagging. Tied the cable to make it shorter and haven't had a problem since.
