Title: Going rate for a 2002 Mk4?
Post by: CitizenKane on 21 April 2016, 19:48
Hi all

I may be selling my GTi soon, but I have no idea what would be considered a reasonable price for it. The garage who I'm buying my new car from offered to take it as a trade-in for €1,000 (about £788), which seems far too low, although I appreciate with older cars there is an element of sentimentality which might skew my idea of the car's real value. I have looked on Autotrader and similar websites but this hasn't been particularly helpful because the price of similar cars seems to differ a lot from car to car.

The car is a black Mk4 2002 reg 1.8T 20V with c. 134,000 miles on the clock. It's all stock with no modifications, other than a new head unit and Vibe speakers and subwoofer I installed a couple of years ago worth about €500 at the time.

It's well kept, not quite immaculate as there are some scratches on the paintwork, but I'm sure I could get rid of these with a bit of t-cut or something. Other than that the only thing wrong with it is the driver door lock had to be replaced, so there are separate keys for the doors and the ignition.

So...any ideas what would be a reasonable asking price for this?

Thanks in advance!

I would say 1000 - 1500 depending on state. Personally you'd be unlikely to get over 1k from me for a car that is 14 years old if not in very good nick. I.e. receipts for lots of repairs, new brand name tyres etc.

1000 Euros from garage seams reasonable considering they need to warrant if they sell it on.

Seems a fair price to me...also saves you the bother of advertising and all the other malarkey which can go with selling privately.

You may be able to get them to up the offer with some careful negotiations....worth a try.

Rip anything out that you have fitted yourself (ie speakers) and sell on separately
