Title: Mk2 8v....Any benefit to fitting a 2.0 8v
Post by: Keviswatt on 21 April 2016, 15:00
Hi folks

Been offered a Mk3 2.0 8v GTI for peanuts, Wondering what benefits (if any) there would be on fitting the engine in my MK2 8v as they seem to have the same power

Thanks in advance

Kev

Not really. But the bottom end with mk2 head is better.
Mk2 head flows better than the 3. Hence the bhp figures of the 8v not being much different

Cheers for the reply

So no noticeable performance increase? I love the car but getting left for dead by a Land rover disco was the last straw!

If its a remapped td5 they fly.
2 litre bottom end will make it livelier.
Ive got a non gti 8v amd know your pain.
Theres a full 16v setup for sale. That would make it better.
150bhp instead of 112

Lol, yeah.. It did!

I'm beginning to wonder if its just down on power, it sounds like the timing might be out. getting pops and bangs on downshifts

They do a little.
In the mk2 section I think theres a guid to getting your digi to run right.
Digi being the injection amd management.
2litre bottom end is still an improvement.

What years the golf?

Itll be digi then.
Im sure a temp sensor makes them run rough.
Its in the set up guide.

the agg is only 3bhp up on the pb but there is more low rpm torque. use the agg block with the pb head and a cam upgrade and it will go very nicely

tbh lemski I think this is a bit of a myth. the agg engine has a milder cam and runs a cat but still makes 3 bhp more than a pb engine at the same rpm.

I thought it was a myth. But im sure someone has tested the theory.
I know in the 16v you put the inlet cam in the abf to make slight gains. Because of lift duration.

But I digress. You cpuld well be right that its a myth

I done the agg block with pb head with a 270 cam in my 8v and it was noticeably different right away nice low end grunt but it fade at 5k but I think it was more to do with the cam, would reccomend it tho, it was certainly quicker

it may not rev much over 5k rpm, but it gets there quicker . if you only change the bottom end you will get the same bhp figure but it will be lower in the rev range. which is why the cam upgrade is needed to help the larger capacity engine breathe at higher revs.

maybe your cam wasn't timed right or it wasn't getting enough fuel.

may well have not have been, but it was definetly faster, still have the 2.0 block with distributer and head with updated valve springs, the (cam is now in my dads 1.8 8v gti) just a heads up

A 2E/AGG mk3 bottom end is a nice upgrade. More torque low down, though it will run out of puff between 5-5.5

A Schrick or similar 270-276 cam & flowed head (particularly with a port matched & flowed exh manifold) compliments it a treat

The only other thing I'd recommend is a 16v pressure plate for the clutch as the standard 8v might struggle a bit...
