Hi, does anyone out there know if the abs pump/ecu on a mk3 gti 16v is the same as 8v (for same production year) Pump looks the same, but I wonder if ecu is different? My 16v is going to fail its next mot on abs not working and I know of an 8v part going cheap.

Pretty sure that 8v and 16v are different.
-
Yes they are different, 16v has a very basic traction control that they share with the VR6
in theory the 8v one should work -its a stand alone system, been retrofitted to Mk2's
btw The important part number is the one on the ECU black box underneath.
-
The numbers on your existing ABS hydraulic pump must be EXACT with the one you change too. I had to change mine, got it off a SEAT.
The numbers can be found underneath.

Ok, thanks everyone for that, almost wasted some money there!! I'll look out for a 16v one.

Don't waste your money! All that counts are the numbers. As i said, i bought mine from a SEAT. Take a mirror and look what it says under yours. Just because you take it from a 16v dosen't mean it add up automatically.

I hadn't thought about a mirror. I was thinking about buying a 16v abs unit in advance so I got the right one and avoiding the car being off road for too long whilst I look for the part. Many thanks for your advice. smiley:

Not even all the 16V/VR6 have the same part number for the ECU. Mine ends with 'A', a lot of others end with 'E'.
-
I can't see any numbers on the underside of mine, with or without a mirror!

Underneath it looks like this (and the numbers you want to see, that have to be exactly the same with the one you're swapping)
