Just after some advice tyre wise.
I'm approaching 30,000 miles on the original OEM rear tyres (Continental Sport Contact 2 still with 4mm left which is pretty impressive). Fronts are fine for now (Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 with 4.5mm left).
My question is: At what depth do you guys feel you should change tyres?
The reason I ask is that I had the back end go a few weeks back on a fairy tight bend, going downhill, in damp greasy conditions. Was nudging 40 mph which was a tad too fast on the approach to the bend and taking into account the conditions. Shook me up and I've lost a bit of confidence to push my GTI hard again.
Would a new set of rears ease my mind? Or should I just man up and admit I was going too fast and my GTI isn't infallible

'Slow down you maniac', is what the car would be saying if it could speak

First of all with that mileage on them when you take them off frame them!
Usually when the tyre gets down to its wear indicator you'll start to fell them snaking on the white lines, ridges on the road good clue that their times up!
Poor tread depth especially in the wet your running the risk of aqua planning, not an nice experience!
I put 2 on the front today. Bargain £100 all in. The pattern looks good! the name on the side wall looks as if it's been made in some distant Chinese district. They have the sure footedness of a " mountain goat" bonus.
The boy did say not to use them in the wet as they have a strange rubber compound...melted down wellie boots dipped in diesel he said under his breath...

You appear to know the answer! But if you are going to blame the tyres, why not stick the fronts on the back and get matching new ones for the front? Personally I'd go down to about 3mm but the way I drive rarely tests the car's grip.
-
Using ContiSport 5 on a GTI PP I change them at 3mm if it's Autumn onwards (there's a Summer TWI) as their grip lessens in colder temps at <3mm. Just did this 2 months ago and the difference of fronts at 3mm vs new fronts was quite noticeable.
-
Change mine when they get to 3mm.
-
I change when I see the metal bands due to uneven where due to my tracking being out
-
Must change my oem rears at some point soon - 9 years later!
-
I rotate my tyres every 5000 miles so that they wear pretty evenly then change all four at the same time when they get to 3mm.
-
Pretty much 2 to 1.6mm
-
When they hit then wear marker. Remember always put new ones on the back and switch ya old rears to the front.
-
Cheers for the help everyone. General (average) consensus is change at around 3mm wear.
I changed the front two when they reached 3mm as I wasn't happy with grip/getting power down.
Maybe I'm too fussy about grip. Maybe I drive too hard sometimes. Maybe my expectations are too high for a FWD motor. Maybe I need 4Motion
-
^Depends on the ime of year. If I was heading for Winter with 3mm on i'd change them, if I was heading for Summer with 3mm on i'd run them down to the markers or to to onset of the colder weather.
-
Mine are on the wear marker now but will not replace until they are at 1.6mm.

Not sure I understand, the wear markers are at 1.6mm, so you're on the legal limit.
I wish we were like Germany, I think they force road users to replace tyres at 3mm, which appears a sensible level of tread based on UK wet weather too.

I wouldn't advise wearing your tyres down any lower! It will be like running on slicks. Not worth the back-end going or aquaplaning on the motorway at 70+.

If we had to change at 3mm that would only give me 2.5mm of wear  for my tyres from new.

I know its seems high, but probably sensible,
The rules in Germany changed again in 2010 - regulations now require all passenger cars and motorbikes including vehicles from foreign countries to be fitted with winter tyres or all season tyres on all axles when conditions are wintery. So not only do they need 3mm or more, they have to have a spare set of wheels with winter tyres!
I guess thats where the vast amounts of part worns on ebay come from.

I think we should also have to have winter tyres here and they should have a minimum limit of 3mm and summer tyres a limit of 2mm
Now sorry but I have got to ask, why Jackie Threehorn?

Jackie Treehorn?
I couldn't think of a better name when I signed up many moons ago and it was nice and random, a Cohen brothers film called The Big Lebowski had a theme of a big Porn producer called Jackie Treehorn.
bit bizarre I guess, but awesome film..

Would you be willing to swap rears to the front to wear them down that wee bit more?
The reason I ask is because I had an EP3 type R and I replaced the fronts. I ended up with premium front tyres and budget rears (thanks to the previous owner) Cue the arse end of the car having a tendency to slide out and keep me on my toes/scare the bejesus out of me. So I swapped the good tyres onto the rear and ran the poorer tyres down on the front so it had predictable understeer until I bought new tyres.
Up to yourself entirely, that was my experience, but then I had a mixture of good and bad tyres fitted! On my GTI I've just popped new Conti 5's on the front and still have about 6mm on the rears
-
I always change my tyres at the 3mm mark regardless. The stopping distance on anything lower is scary even in the dry. A colleague of mine is in the traffic police and they change there tyres @ 3mm for that reason.

Love it.

I wait until about 2 mm, and as the tyres are the only bits that touch the road is only by tyres with a good reputation like the 4 Michelins I bought 3 or 4 months ago, 450 quid for 4. Another reason for not buying Chinese tyres to me is their not Chinese, everything is made there so it keeps a bit of money on our side of the world too. Win win.
-
I work for Cornwall fire and rescue and have to drive on blue lights to incidents , our policy is change at 3 MM and always michelins for some reason

The wear markers are 2mm, the UK legal limit is 1.6mm. Manufacturers do not just make tyres for the UK market they are a world wide market.
