Hi all,
Hope everyone is having a good weekend!!!!
My car went in for its first service last week and needs two front tyres. Obviously good news to get shot of the bridgestones. I looked online and Iv asked for Continental sport 5's to go on at £106 a corner. I thought that was reasonable.
I know tyres are always talked about but my question is are the conti 5's one of the best to go for or would anyone recommend anything different?
Cheers
Ben

Tyres are bit personal - everyone has their favourites, (except Bridgestones!). I always go for the Conti's as they are always at or near the top of EVO magazine's annual test.
Get them swapped to the back, if you haven't already, then the remaining Bridgestones will depart next! Back tyres last a lot longer than fronts.
-
Conti 5 are great, that doesn't seem the best deal to me. I normally find a local tyre place to come close to online quotes.
I would aim for nearer £90 a corner on the conti 5.
Conti 6 is out and getting great reviews, but not generally available as yet in the UK.
I will go for Michelin PS4 when I next need tyres, also worth considering Goodyear F1 assymetric 3 as these can be found for £8-85 and perform well, if not quite as long lasting as others.

Personally I had the same thing at my 1 year service. Dealer tried to make me buy two new fronts from them at a crispy price. Said no thanks I'll swap them some other time. So 1 week later I bought 4 new Michelins PSS, much cheaper than the Bridgestones the dealer would've put in place. I recommend them, no more wheel spin.
-
I wouldn't say you could go wrong with the conti tyres they are excellent tyres.
I personally like Michelin and have just got the new PS4 but any of the top brands will be fine

Michelins PS4 from mytyres are very reasonable

I had 4 Michelin PS4 fitted a couple of weeks ago at a cost of £114 each. They're mega. No wheelspin at all from a full-bore standing start, better cornering grip, quieter and amazingly, they seem to round the last edges of the ride quality, increasing refinement even more.
I can't fault them, and would highly recommend. They also look nice!
Excuse the dirty wheels!

I've got PS3's which are shed loads better than the Tombstones, but if I had my own choice it would have been CSC5's.
My GTD is miles better since I've got the PS3's on it - really much better.

Mytyres had some website issues last week I ordered 4 new continentals for £150 delivered
Order got cancelled though

I'm pretty happy with the Bridgestones at the moment. They probably suit my sedate driving style but I won't be changing them in a hurry that's for sure.
If I do it will be for Michelin PS4's I would imagine.
-
Bridgestone's start off fine, but performance goes away as they wear, first 25% of wear is fine, then it all seems to fall away at a disproportionate rate as they wear further. No point changing until there is a need to.
-
I've always used Goodyears and on my mk6 I had the efficient grip performance which were very good, grippy and quiet, the fronts did only last 8k though :-O
-
I'd better not post my tyre escapades. Does anyone do remoulds anymore?

Not in my experience...They tramp from day 1 in wet and dry conditions and don't get any worse (or better) for tramping as they wear in. Their grip is really poor in the damp (where the road is barely wet) in all temperatures (relative for a premium tyre going on a car with a bit of poke), below average in the wet (where there is adequate standing water to be driven off by the tyre). They're as bad with 6mm on as 2mm. They are rock hard (which is probably the main cause for lack of grip and traction) and will last a long time (expect 25k miles on the fronts for a motorway miler GTD.
If you have a Golf with tramping issues or the car is fidgety on damp roundabouts at pretty low speeds then changing them will transform the car.

Conti sport contact 5P's for me for last few years - 3 years on FWD and now on my R 4WD. Faultless in wet and dry, no wheelspin at all. CSC 6 May be available now? CSC 5P is a brilliant tyre.
If not those then I'd go Michelin PSS.
Put your new tyres on the rear, and swap rears to front.

Yep have had some definite tramping with mine in the damp/wet. Glad to hear it won't get any worse though as they wear, I will take small comfort in that! I'm about 15K miles a year so will see where they are down to when it gets to winter and if around 4mm I'll change the fronts and either go with Conti 6 or Michelin PS4 as people are suggesting on here. I guess the wheelspin will wear them out a bit faster as well lol
Bridgestones don't seem too bad in the very few dry days since I've had the car, but then again, this GTD is by far the fastest car I've owned so I'm not that great a judge.
-
I'm a huge fan of Michelin Cup 2 tyres even in winter they are better than the Continental tyres the car came with.
-
Had goodyears on my last 2 cars. Is it time to try the continentals? Not minted so no michelins for me!

GY and Conti are both excellent, and I would happily have either, but strange you would think the PS4 is expensive? As mine cost £425 fitted less £50 Michelin fuel contribution. So £93 fitted
If you mean the PSS then on 18's you would be out of luck as the 225/40/18 is not available in the correct load rating anyway. The PSS is being fazed out in all but homologated sizes (just like the PS2) as they are reverting to something PS4 related in future and dropping the PSS.

I have Pirelli PZero's on my GTD with the 19'S. The fronts have nearly done 17K and will require replacing. Do you recommend changing them for a different brand or stick with the Pirelli's? Size is 225/35/19

Michelin, Pilot Sport or Super Sport or even what I use which is the Cup 2's

Not much love on here for P Zeros but mine came with them on from factory and no problems so far. Got 14,000 out of front ones and still originals on rear at 22,000 miles and still 5mm left!
The P Zero "Silver" is a bit bling with the logo but they're fine so far

I had a look at my new car at the dealers yesterday, and was quite happy to see they came will Pirelli's. After the dreadful experience with the Bridgestone's on my current GTD, I thought they can't be any worse, and when I had them on my Scirocco (previous to my current GTD), albeit they were 235/40/18 in self sealing variety, they lasted really well (got over 20k on them), and gripped superbly even in the wet, despite what everyone one else was saying about them at the time.
Here's my new one

They seem to do alright for the F1 boys (albeit they don't have a choice)
