Hi having ral problems with my car now i just want to check the cylinders are numbered 1 to 4 reading left to right??
Is this true? thanks
-
Im sure its cambelt side for 1. Whats the problem
-
The front of the engine (where the belts and stuff is) has cylinder 1 and the back (gearbox end) has cylinder 4.
-
Thanks all
having problem with cylinder 4 misfire,., swopped plugs and coil pack but still getting cylinder 4,, the problem only started after changing the half moon gasket rocker gasket and replacing some breather hoses that crumbled while doing above job.. really starting to piss me off!!!!! any ideas lads as im out of them thanks
-
Push down coild or bolt down? Swapped 4 n 1 about to see if the fault swaps to 1.
Earth bolted to the rocker cover tight?
-
Injectors OK?
-
swapped packs and plugs and still got fault on 4 so think i can rule those out, also had the plug firing on top of the rocker cover so think the loom is ok(not 100% as there is splits in the wire casing but wire inside looks ok).
so itavaltalainen think you might be on to something,, any tips on testing them? can i just swap 2 round and see if the fault moves cylinder...
Thanks for all your comments as any straws to clutch to will help

Take them out and see if they spray nice and clean when you turn the engine over. Obviously disconnect coil packs so you don't blow it up :D
Also perhaps check the (low voltage) line to ignition coil with a cheap oscilloscope.
-
Just swap 2 injectors over. Id have thoigg that would bring up an injector voltage fault and not thrown misfire...
But ive never had an injector go down on a 20vt.
Ive got a fair few if you want to send the part number over and ill happly chuck one in the post
-
going to try swapping 2 round but its something ive done im sure,, only got this problem after changing half moon and rocker gasket also changed the breather pipes,,, is there anything i could of done wrong or broke doing those jobs?
-
Cant see it. Unless the earth isnt on the rocker or youve managed somehow to trap a wire.
Take the breather of. Real longshot but it eliminates that.
Maybe coilpack loom plug is loose and underload its connecting, Disconnecting.
-
did think about the plug.. is there anyway of testing it with a multi meter? do you know much about that that pcv valve cus i brought a cheap set of breather hoses and it came with a pcv valve so i changed them all but the valve was faulty,, was getting random misfires so put original valve back in now just cylinder 4 could that of caused any more hassle??? sorry for all the long posts but its the family car F****D without it
-
If you take the pvc valve out then all the breathing system will vent to air.
On a s3 I did I replaced all the breathing sytem with silicone piping and kept the pvc valve in place. Nit that it helps you alot.
The metal clips should be down firm.
(with out looking at my 20vt engine thats at the workshop) im sure that the loom runs.close to the rocker into the main loom so you may have trapped the wire.
Vag com will test if there getting the correct current throufh the plugs. When thw cars not running am sure theres no current.

still stuck on this fault lads,,,been reading about a solenoid by the CCT could this maybe the problem??
-
Have you checked the spring inside the coil pack can/is make contact with the spark plug, take it off and look inside (sounds daft but a mate of mine was messing with his loads and part of the spring broke off and it wasn't making a connection)
if you have checked the coil packs and the misfire doesn't move then you can rule them out (except for the above)
plugs checked and same thing.
The only thing I could thing next would be the wiring harness to the number 4 coil pack, its an easy fix, just get a plug online (or on here if someone breaking) and solder the new one on.
A pic might still be useful in case there is something we can see you aren't aware of

Im with Dan. Ive got a spare coilpack loom I think. Ill have a look if you want.
Again a picture would help us see something that you may have overlooked
