Title: Cooling Fans on 20V
Post by: gtihammy on 03 April 2016, 19:33
Hi Guys

My Mk3 is running the 20 valve turbo bam engine and considering its only recently went on the road I noticed the car seems to get pretty hot before the fans kick in i have changed the fan switch with no difference, I was just wondering if anybody knew that if I was to wire the fans so they are on all the time (Only when the ignition is on of course  :D ) would it do any harm?

Thanks In advance

What is "pretty hot"?

They only kick in at 95 and 105 on a standard mk3. Having them on permanently is a bit useless.

What radiator and fan setup do you have currently?

Well im not exactly sure how hot it is getting and well even if go a drive come back and leave the car running for about 45 minutes they still never kick in, and got an equivalent alloy radiator to the standard one and a slim line fan.

Why don't you know how hot it's getting?

Which rad and fans are in there exactly? I.e. measurements of radiator - there were about 10 different ones.
Single or twin fans? What's a slim line fan? Aftermarket?

45 mins and its not getting hot.
Is the thermostat stuck open.
Does the fan run constantly or not at all.

Ide have thought 45mins running it would be overheating.
The last s3 that I had in and was doing that within 15mins on tickover the gauge was up and the water was bubbling

If your cooling system is healthy, your engine temperature should be around 90 degrees C
-or with the temperature needle on the dash pointing vertical.

As already staid by lemski this sounds like thermostat is stuck open, or may even be missing
How are you controlling the new slimline fan?
