Title: MK7 Golf GTI - Front Shock Absorber Boots
Post by: Mk7 GTI_PP on 29 March 2016, 20:56
Hi - I'm a newbie on here, my first post, so apologies if this post is not in correct area etc!

I have a Mk7 Golf GTI PP DSG with DCC, done approx 7500 miles. To say I'm OCD as to detailing would be a severe understatement. I was putting my Santiago Alloys back on a few weeks back and noticed the rubber shock absorber boot had come detached from the top of the shock...I know that when on the jack the shock extends and the boot has normally become detached from the bottom of the shock, when the car is back on the ground I ensure the bottom of the boot is then pushed back over the flange at the base of the shock.

Question is, should the top of the shock boot ever become detached? If so, can it be put back in place?

Really appreciate anyone's advice........Secondly, knocking noise at low speed ring any bells to anyone...?

Secondly, knocking noise at low speed ring any bells to anyone...?

Sounds like it could be the top mount on one of the front struts... Just had mine replaced under warranty...

But could be a number of causes, difficult to day without hearing it.

Reluctantly after my car developed a squeak from the suspension I booked it in to the dealership, the car has only done about 7000 mile in 2.5 years, three attempts and three weeks later it is now quiet.
The dealership changed both rear shock absorbers and replaced both front shocks and top mounts and nsf drop link.
Good luck

I have adjustable dampers on mine and share the frustration. Every time I swap wheels I have to check the boot is back in position. I've never found it detached at the top but I have unseated it by mistake iirc,  don't recall it being a pain to reseat. It was quiet again after the first dealer visit when they found the boots loose but now it's no different and the boots are still seated.

I don't like the noises it makes over speed bumps (sometimes) but dealer claimed unable to find fault. Wouldn't say it knocks,  more like groans.

simonpoly - thanks for your reply, do you have DCC? And out of interest, what wheels?
