Some of you may have already seen these, but as nobody else posted I thought I would... just went on YouTube and on my suggested videos this came up: Golf R vs Civic Type-R:
Given the fairly similar specs you might think it would be close...
http://www.topgear.com/car-news/hot-hatch/top-gear-drag-races-5-honda-civic-type-r-vs-vw-golf-r (http://www.topgear.com/car-news/hot-hatch/top-gear-drag-races-5-honda-civic-type-r-vs-vw-golf-r)
At the end of that video it showed what the next one was going to be: Golf R vs Golf GTI PP vs Golf GTD (this one just went up on the top gear site today):
http://www.topgear.com/car-news/hot-hatch/top-gear-drag-races-11-vw-golf-r-vs-vw-golf-gti-pp-vs-vw-golf-gtd (http://www.topgear.com/car-news/hot-hatch/top-gear-drag-races-11-vw-golf-r-vs-vw-golf-gti-pp-vs-vw-golf-gtd)
No suprises there but it was close between the GTI and GTD for the first few seconds.
I also found this one: Golf R vs Focus RS vs Merc A45 AMG:
http://www.topgear.com/car-news/hot-hatch/top-gear-drag-races-10-focus-rs-vs-vw-golf-r-vs-merc-a45-amg (http://www.topgear.com/car-news/hot-hatch/top-gear-drag-races-10-focus-rs-vs-vw-golf-r-vs-merc-a45-amg)
and this one: Golf R vs 911 Carrera GTS vs McLaren 675LT: the result is obvious but maybe interesting to watch all the same:
http://www.topgear.com/car-news/top-gear-drag-races/top-gear-drag-races-8-mclaren-675-vs-911-carrera-gts-vs-golf-r (http://www.topgear.com/car-news/top-gear-drag-races/top-gear-drag-races-8-mclaren-675-vs-911-carrera-gts-vs-golf-r)
I know its a golf forum so we're all a bit biased, but I have to say quite frankly I think the styling on the civic is awful... looks like a toy next to the Golf R

Great find that Dave!

4.6 secs 0 - 60 for the R is mightily impressive! Considerably quicker than the GTI but probably at a massive cost in fuel.
The thing that struck me most was how much better the Carbon Grey looks than the white

You'd be surprised how well the R can do without driving like a nun. On my 20 mile commute (half of it doing 80mph on dual carriageway and the motorway) when the ambient temp was up to 12C on Thursday morning, my R managed 34.6mpg. R vs GTI, the R will be about 4mpg like-for-like down due to the Haldex, DSG vs manual sees the DSG up to 10% thirstier in real life driving (my experience comparing my MK5 170TDI and MK7 GTD manuals to my Dad's DSG versions when i've had a lend.
When driving, unless you're an absolute loon, you'll only see yourself burying the throttle 5-10% of the time, the rest of the time it'll be almost as frugal as a GTI (albeit using more expensive fuel).
Surprised the GTD does so well against the GTI off the line, considering it's more likely to spin off the line. I'd expect the GTD to get behind and then reel GTI in a bit mid range when the diesel torque kicks in.
I've seen the new Civic R up close on the A1 (stuck behind one in crawling in traffic near the Angel of the North for about 5 miles), it looked like a 17 year old Halfords enthusiast had designed it with lots of pointless vents and a ridiculous spoiler - the 60 year old driving it looked like he'd borrowed his Grandson's car for the day.

Couldn't have put it better myself!
I saw another GTI vs GTD drag race on auto express I think it was and it was a similar result, you'd think the GTD would pull some back with the torque, but by the time that matters the GTI is long gone. I guess that's what another (nearly) 50bhp in GTI PP guise does.
If I didn't have a 50 mile round trip to work everyday, I'd definitely be thinking of an R next time. Managed 55mpg on the way to work yesterday though in the GTD and wasn't totally driving like a nun
-
I would liked to have seen the match between the GTi and GTD both with DSG boxes to negate the difference the driver could make.
I'm in my mid 40's now so I no longer do the traffic light drag race, I'm more interested in mid range power.
As for the Civic Type R....no thanks.

That Porsche of the line is a beast

The GTI has a bit less torque than the GTD but is lower geared. Low gearing is a torque multiplier (obviously) when transmitting power to the road it's like the GTI is half a gear lower than the GTD but also revs higher. Which is my overly complicated way of saying that in real terms the GTI has as much torque as a GTD at most speeds and at higher revs it has more.
A rolling 'in gear' test would have been interesting as we've all seen the company car GTD drivers in real life absolutely blasting it out of motorway speed restrictions; they don't hang about!!
I think the GTD did so well off the line despite its torque theoretically handicapping it with wheel spin because it was manual so the driver could modulate the throttle better than the DSG's in sport mode. Obviously once rolling the higher revving patrols and much quicker gear shifting sees the other two move ahead.
It was pretty dramatic how fast the DSG R actually is - until you see it up against the other cars they drag raced it against! Puts it all in perspective!
The Porsche and McLaren were amazing, not so long ago only Superbikes and Atoms would accelerate that quickly.
Great thread and good find Dave :afro:

Civic R
Only need to take one look at it to remind yourself why you are in a Golf forum!

I took my wife's Mk6 GTi out for a spin today as it hasn't been driven since we had the accident and something I very rarely do I floored it from the lights and was destroyed by a '16 plate Abarth 595 and speaking to the owner afterwards he said that it has 180bhp but he has it amped to 200bhp. The thing sounded fantastic and that was with the standard exhaust.
Sitting in it was also a surprise as it had more room in it than the golf and the Sabelt seats were fantastic.

Great videos!
I gave my GTI a good booting today for the first time, up a slip road to join a motorway. Pretty sure my gear changes could have been better (absolutely sure) but even so was nudging 100 when I hit the main carriageway. I enjoyed it  but my OH wasn't so sure....
-
Yes its quite easy to get to 3 figures when joining the motorway if you put your foot down! I usually stop myself at about 80 though  Cant go anywhere near booting mine when my OH is in the car as she doesnt like it one bit.. Have to drive like a nun!
@exonian - I'm one of those GTD drivers who blast out of the motorway speed restrictions  When doing 50 drop it down from 6th to 4th and boot it, and 80+ arrives very quickly indeed

Then you have definitely ordered the right car.Mid range overtaking surge (40-70) in the GTD is very impressive.Dawdlers-out of my way!.

That's what I love about the GTD, that satisfying slug of torque right where you want it.
I can't think of a much better cross country car, especially with a stage 1 map.
