Title: Large turbo on Medium power build?
Post by: MoMartin on 25 March 2016, 21:56
Hi, I've seen a GT35 setup for the 1.8t that I'm interested in, but with my current specs my car can't exceed 300bhp / 300ftlb. As I'm aware this turbo is overkill for what I'm wanting, but I have big ideas for my car in the near future, so it would be silly to get a smaller turbo just to upgrade it a few months down the line.

Am I being stupid or what?

Thanks in advance

you have to start somewhere if chasing more power, may as well start with the most important part  from what I remember / have read you will need quite a lot of mods to get that running smoothly

I've read that I would need to upgrade:
The injectors
Fuel pump
Turbo Intake Pipe
MAF

Then obviously I would also need another remap too.

And I already have a FMIC, uprated clutch, full turbo back 3" exhaust and a forge 008 recirc valve.

However, after reading in to the gt35 a bit more, It looked like a complete overkill for this car. I wanted to eventually see 400ish bhp, but even then, that would be a silly idea on a fwd car.

I could be tempted to sell my 1.8t 4 motion for the right offer

I struggle to get the power down on mine in second gear, imagine yours with a GT35

Yea, Fwd doesn't lend itself well to bigger horsepower. You'll be fine with a gt35 running low boost, but you'll need a low psi wastegate spring. 3" MAF is fine for horsepower goals.

That's half the fun of it!
Might be going for a not-so powerful k300 hybrid now.

Thanks for the tips, I've decided that the GT35 is probably a bit too large for what I'm wanting, well for a fwd car anyway!

A maxed K03s is still great fun and surprises enough people for my liking, anything else is too much imho

I believe we have! That was about a year and a half ago when I had my Mk4 Golf. I think you were looking to have the WMI / VR6 MAF fitted back then too(?)

It'd also be good to compare yours to my VRS, which is meant to of been remapped to an unconfirmed 230-240.

If only looking 300hp/tq k04 hybrid  will do, but standard k04 with supporting mods and good tune get you 280hp/300tq. You dont want big turbo unless have very deep pockets.

Thanks, 300 hp / ft/lb was a mid point really, so that I could upgrade in the future.

I'm still in two minds of the whole process If I'm honest.

Does anyone know what the ECU cross compatibility is for an AUQ?

I.E. Can I use an ecu off an AUM for example?

Immobiliser disabled of course.
