Hi,
trying to do the timing on a 93 1.4 MK3 engine ABD as had to fit a new dizzy and so far have been advised a number of different ways to do it - which is right ?
1) Strobe light 6 btdc at 800 rpm
2) Strobe light 6 btdc at 1000 rpm
3) Set engine to tdc and dizzy to point to Number 1 and then the ECU sorts it all out ( hardly runs )
4) Use VCDS to do the timing but not sure how.
Any ideas or suggestions - thanks
Simon

Have you got the old dizzy so you can see roughly where it was bolted in?
You can try the strobe at 1000rpm take it for a drive. See if it feels.about right.
I took dizzy out mine a few months ago and roughly remembered the position and its about where it should be.
Youll know if its too advanced or retarted when you go.down the road init

You need VCDS to put the system into basic setting then you can adjust it with the aid of a strobe light. Otherwise the ECU will keep on moving the ignition timing!

Many thanks - the old dizzy had to go back as an exchange unit so don't have it any more.
On VCDS (full version - new to it ) do I just need to select basic setting option 4 ( if I remember correctly ) and do nothing else not select anything from there when I use the strobe.
VCDS for my engine doesn't seem to have any label files which is a shame as the measuring blocks cant seem to tell me anything. Will give it a go tomorrow
thanks

Basic setting, then diplay group 00. This ought to put it into basic setting mode.
