Title: Boot lock problem
Post by: rbean on 23 March 2016, 21:01
hi everyone new to this forum so apologies if I'm in the wrong place, please point me in the right direction if I am.
I recently bought a mk4 golf v6 4motion as a project (it had been sat outside for about 3 years :( )

I have got it all running and driving but one thing I can not fix is the boot lock and its driving me nuts...,.
so ....
the boot is open, but it won't lock with the key or central locking, I've removed all interior panels to get to the lock and can see that the central locking is moving but the latch its self is not locking ( if I close the boot I can open it without using the handle)
So I've replaced the latch but still have the same problem....,

If anyone could help with this matter it would be greatly appreciated   :)

I'd replace the lock completely?

I was thinking that but I wanted to make sure I rule everything out before forking out for a new lock to find out it still doesn't work :/ e.g something electrical

Id say lock, if you think its electrical unplug the connector for.central locking, thatll rule that out then

will give it a go in the morning, it just seems strange that when you close the boot it won't even latch properly , for some reason the latch isn't catching and its all in line ( I've been sat inside the boot for hours opening and closing the boot trying to work out what it is.
obviously the easy fix would be a complete new lock just trying to save some pennies :)

I hear ya, i had to diavnose a central locking fault on the passat, turns out a previous owner had replaced the mech but never.plugged.it back in.

IF it does not lock with key than it won't be electrical. Usual electrical issues would only stop it from locking with central locking.

Yeah that sounds about right .... the previous owner had the boot lid replaced in it as they reversed into something, I've already had to realign the boot myself so whoever did the work previously (as the lock has been replaced too as I have separate keys) obviously didn't do a very good job of it :(

The main problem I'm having though is that it won't close properly either the boot lid is aligned with car and the locks are aligned too

Have you tried loosening the two torx screws on the fixed part which the latch engages when closed? This should allow some movement L-R and IN-OUT...just small adjustments, but could be enough to make a big difference. Don't loosen right off...just enough to allow movement when tapped. I cured a rattling bootlatch like that...it only had to go in about 3mm.

Might be worth a try.

Just curious...how did you get on with this?
