Title: Pics - spot what's wrong with my bumper?
Post by: gamcqui on 19 March 2016, 20:42
Hi all,

Had a minor prang (other party's fault) in December and wife's car went into the local VW dealer's bodyshop 2 weeks ago to have a bumper re-spray.  Came back a few days later, looking good as new.

However, over the last fortnight, she has been complaining that the ACC has been intermittently problematic, causing the car to lose power when on cruise and sometimes the warning sign indicating an impending crash would flash up with the accompanying loud beep - so I've been meaning to ring them to have it recalibrated or something.

However today it got serious - ACC set at 50mph on the A1m through roadworks (average speed cams) white van man close up behind us and the ACC suddenly goes haywire - loud beep and slams on the brakes.  White van went through the cones to avoid us.

So when we got home, I went to see if there was anything visibly wrong with the ACC radar sensor. And found this:

That's a bit of a miss! Using the right bumper would be a good start.

Don't think they changed the bumper, just resprayed it and replaced the lower grille.

so I'm not going mad?  There is definitely not meant to be a grille in front of the ACC sensor?

I am livid, this almost caused a major accident today, and we had a 14 month old baby in the car!!  What were they thinking?!?

Failure 101 on their part. Yeah it should have had a space for the senior to have an unobstructed view...

Bit of an error that!

I don't want to hijack your thread but how close would you have to get to a vehicle in front for it to brake for you?
I've left mine a couple of times in slow traffic and got where I had to break as I was getting a bit nervous!

It works with the adaptive cruise on the m/way ok though.

Auto braking only work below 18mph from memory...

Definitely gives a sharp stab of the brakes to warn you even when above that speed.

That's what happened today, except three times in a row in about 2 seconds. Guy in van thought I'd done it on purpose - as if with the baby in the car!!

Repair fail. Should be a square cutout.

That is shocking, I'd be livid if my car was left in that sort of state after a repair. Complete amateur error and not acceptable from any kind of professional outfit.

That's just plain stupidity on the bodyshops part! They either haven't ordered the parts based on your vin or they have and not checked it when it's arrived, glad nobody got hurt.

I am by nature a very placid sort of guy, however that might have thrown me over the edge!
