Evening all,
First post so go easy, been lurking for a while so after picking my GTi up a couple of weeks ago I thought I would join! Had a MK5 for 6 yrs and 25k faultless miles which I sold a couple of years back. Went for 5 door, Carbon Grey, Santiago alloys, Car Play and Parking pack this time and bought through DTD which I must admit was the easiest car I have ever bought! Took Booth's advice and picked the car up untouched and I would really recommend this especially as there are some horror stories out there and I would only class myself as an amateur in the detailing world but my paintwork is flawless. Only problem I have had is the MIB 2 shutting down completely which was fixed today so I will post a reply in the thread that is already up and running.

Hya. Not a regular on here by any means but some really nice people who always help. Your spec sounds great and glad you got the problem sorted. Am driving a night blue pp gti after having my first one stolen. Utterly wonderful car. Enjoy everything you do in it.

Welcome Pompey, I'm relatively new here too and will second what jpo says - there are lots of very friendly and helpful people on here. Descriptions are fine but everyone loves pictures
Hope you enjoy your GTI, I love mine!

Welcome to the forum Pompey. Your spec sounds great - Carbon Grey - lovely and the envy of many an R owner who would've specced that colour if it had been an option for us.
Glad you found the advice to be useful and it's an approach I would recommend to those who have the time and inclination to have a go at detailing their own car. Sorry to hear of your MIB2 woes, sadly not uncommon, am reading ever increasing posts about similar problems with these units. So far I've only had a few blank screens that a reset has sorted. Anyway hope it's all working well for you now. Post some pics up if you feel like it - be lovely to see your new GTI.

Hello Pompey and congratulations on your choice of user name; I assume you're a fellow PFC
supporter sufferer? Me too although I'm based near Fareham.
I've ordered through DTD as well, got a build date for mid-April so expecting car in May - is there anything I should know about the DTD process (mine's coming via JCB in Gillingham)?
Interesting that you asked them not to prep the car - do they literally do no bodywork prep, or do they just remove the plastic wrapping?
Enjoy the car
Bubba.

Bubba, the dealership will do whatever you instruct them to do in terms of not prepping your car. I got my car via DTD from JCB Medawy (James Callaway), and asked them not to prep the car as I wanted to detail it myself and avoid any risk of the dealer inflicting swirls or damage to the new paintwork. So I asked them to only remove the transport stickers so they could properly PDI the car, but that's all. I asked them to leave everything else, including not removing any glue residue after taking stickers off and no washing or drying the car. They were happy to oblige. You can of corse ask them not to remove the transport stickers but I would not recommend this as they have a duty to check the car, and this could prevent that, then if there turns out to be any damage, you might not have any come back as they would state they couldn't check the car properly. Alternatively you could ask them to remove the stickers and give the car a quick jet wash only. It's really up to you, In my experience (and many other's opinion) JCB are a fantastic dealership and they will be happy to honor any request not to prep the car.
JCB Medway are quite accustomed to some requesting this type of thing. Of course if you ask them to skip the prep, you will be collecting a dirty looking car. Mine was filthy when I picked it up from the dealership but that was fine by me. JCB don't do the whole unveiling of the car handover anyway, like some dealerships do. You simply collect your car from the car park, so less of a big deal if it's unprepped. And then of course you either detail it yourself or get a pro detailer to do it if that's your choice. Are you thinking of detailing the car yourself?
In terms of DTD process, when I ordered mine, as well as getting the usual VW text/email tracker updates, I kept in regular contact with the salesman and he was fantastic at keeping in touch and responding very quickly to my queries. Times were a bit different then as wait times were much longer (8 months for my R), but despite that, cannot fault JCB Medway, they were excellent.
-
I've had a chat with the dealer and a pro detailer is going to prep my car before handover, the dealer hasn't had any issue in allowing this but I think it's a dealer dependent thing, some will allow it and some won't

Bubba
Like Booth said JCB Medway are very accomodating regarding non or partial prepping of your car following PDI don't feel shy in asking for what you would actually prefer.
Following PDI I was able to remove the transport wraps myself in their presence so we could both check for any paint flaws or damage - there were none.
A gentle jet wash to remove leaves etc with no drying (my request).
Although it was still pretty filthy with some glue residues , contaminants etc when I drove it off I was more than happy to know the paintwork was having good start and I had control of the process of detailing.
A couple of weeks later I had starting the 'Detailing Road ' with plenty of advice from good people on here on how to tackle the various stages . Very satisfying.

Hi Bubba,
Yes fellow PFC sufferer!
My DTD was also through JCB in Gillingham and I cannot praise James enough for his help and like Booth said it is a no frills pick up, my car was outside just ready to go, James had all the papers ready to sign, showed me the controls which was when he noticed the MIB 2 cut out but was fine all the way home. He tried to get my local dealers to change the unit but they wanted the car in and at the time the problem was only intermittent so I could see me taking it in to them and the problem not happening and having to go back countless times! When the unit totally failed I spoke to James and he got the unit ordered in and booked me in to have it changed yesterday.
I signed up to the VW tracking and it all worked like clockwork, most impressed although I know some have had issues.
Booth has done a great write up on new car preparation and I just had them remove the transport covers and the stickers, it still had writing on the window screen! I didn't even have them pressure wash it at all, it rained all the way home for me so it would have been just as dirty!
I used the following:
Autobrite snow foam through their own lance attached to my pressure washer.
2 bucket method to wash with Autofinesse lambs wool mit and 1 separate bucket and Wo-Wo wheel mit to do the wheels
Autofinesse Iron Out
Autofinesse Oblitarate to get the sticker residue off, this stuff is quite strong so just dab it on and wipe off with a microfibre cloth
Autofinesse drying towel and Wo-Wo wheel drying towel
Autofinesse Tripple to give it a very light polish - this also gets the writing off the screen
G-Techniq C2V3 for some winter protection, love this product for the ease of use and the finish and protection it gives. I have a tub of Autofinesse Illusion for the summer to try!
Autofinesse Mint rims
G-Techniq C4 & C5 on the front glass, not brave enough to use G1 yet!
Autofinesse Revive on the plastics
Autoglym fast glass on the inside, I used a glass cloth from Aldi for this and was really impressed for 99p!
I think that is it, I find the snowfoam good but a bit messy especially when it is windy! Just make sure you rinse between each of the decontamination stages.
Worse part is the Santiago wheels to clean and protect, they have a inner groove so might need to invest in some wheel woolies and applying/removing the mint rims probably took as long as the rest of the car!
Now is the time to look at buying your cleaning products as there will be plenty on deals for Easter, Autofinesse have had 20% off and free waxes in the past, Slims detailing is also worth a look for deals.
Booths write up was much more comprehensive than mine so well worth a read!
In all the excitement of picking the car up and wanting to get it home I forgot to take any pictures and only have one of when I finished so will post that when I get chance.

I drove my car home completely unwashed and covered in stickers.
I have noticed a paint blemish near the petrol cap that is being looked at tomorrow by my dealer. Hopefully it can be sorted, if not I will have a few decisions to make.
I also noticed a tiny scuff near the volume knob on the centre console as I was sat with my salesman during handover. He was morified and it is being changed tomorrow when the look at my paint issue.
If I was doing it all again, I would be tempted to get a specialist detailer down to the dealership to prep the car. Mine was so filthy, you would't have spotted any flaws in the paintwork unless they were blatantly obvious.
I only spotted the console damage because the sun was shining through the drivers window and showed every mark up.
I noticed the flaw in the paintwork the minute I dried the car off, again because of the angle the sun was at.
I'm quite relaxed about these issues at the moment and not allowing them to spoil ownership of my gorgeous GTI

Just for info - as the subject of new car detailing and particularly collecting a new car in an unprepped state from dealerships is becoming more common practice, to assist those new to detailing, I have done a quick guide to detailing and made it a sticky thread in the detailing section.
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=277318.msg2534393#msg2534393
Also, for anyone interested here is my thread of detailing a brand new car that has NOT been prepped by the dealership.

Hope this is of help to those considering looking after their own cars.

Kalimon - that blemish will polish out easy peasy either by hand or by DA.

Thanks yet again Rebecca, you've put my mind at rest

Well, so many helpful replies - this seems like a really friendly site with none of the nonsense that you see on, say, Pistonheads. Pompey1972 and Booth11 you both must also frequent Detailing World methinks!
I think I'll ask James at JCB Medway to remove the transport stickers and that's it. I'll then get the car professionally detailed once back at home. Booth (Rebecca) what sort of cost am I looking at for this? Can anyone recommend a good detailer around Fareham, Hants?
Bubba.
PS Pompey1972 it's looking like the play offs at best, not sure my nerves can stand it.

Bubba, pro detail costs will vary but a new car detail will be somewhere in the region of £250 which would include a machine polish, as well as all the usual stuff like decontamination, final stage protection for bodywork and wheels and interior and glass prep. Check out the detailing section here and of course Detailing World for more detailing advice and info.

Any recommendations for a polish to get that blemish off my paintwork Rebecca?
I don't own a DA.

Hopefully this picture link will work!

This was after I first cleaned it, only took the 1 picture on my phone but will take some better ones when I next clean it.
Bubba - I think your right, play offs at best this season!

I've been researching polishes for a minor swirl I have probably caused on one of the doors.
Meguiars ScratchX 2.0 and Meguiars Ultimate Compound look like decent options that I might try. Both apply with a foam applicator and wipe off with a microfibre.
I'll be using the ScratchX first as it is a finer compound, and if it doesn't work then I'd try the UC.
Has anyone tried either of these products? Or has anyone used other similar products with success?
I'd prefer to have a go by hand before I invest in a DA!

Thanks dipstick, I'll check it out

I don't own a DA.
I'd recommend Poorboys SSR1, or Meguiars 205. Both quite fine compounds with fine abrasives. If a slightly more abrasive compound is required the SSR2 or Meguiars 105. It looks like quite minor marring so start with a the least abrasive polish, on a foam applicator (if by hand) or on a finishing or very light cut pad (if by DA).
Will you be polishing by hand Kalimon? Although these polishes are optimised for a DA, they can be used by hand too to great effect. I've polished many a bird poo mark out with SSR1 or SSR2 by hand. Common sense but start with a clean car, paintwork must be very clean before polishing. If by hand:
By hand:
Apply with a foam applicator and work gently in to the paintwork
Wipe off with a microfibre, check the progress using an LED torch (smartphone one will do for small areas) If necessary go over again with a bit of fresh polish until the marring is gone
Wipe off all polish residue
Apply your preferred protection (wax, sealant) to the area
If using a DA:
Start with light cutting compound as above, on a black finishing pad
If that's not enough move to a light cutting pad
Wipe off residue to check progress as before
Repeat polishing if needed
Refine down with a black pad
Wipe off residue
Protect as before

Yes I will be polishing by hand Rebecca. All spent up on detailing products at the moment but may well invest in a DA very shortly when funds allow

That's probably the only downside about not having the dealer prepare the car.
Especially if folk are taking it away with the protective sheets on or the car is filthy.
Once you take it away some dealers might try and claim it happened after it left the dealership.
A power wash should at least make it clean enough to inspect it without causing any damage.
But as said, that will sort no problem. Although I personally wouldn't allow the valeters to sort it. They'll just buff over it and cause all sorts of other problems that will be highlighted in the sun. I've been there  Looks great at the time.
