Title: Clutch not returning
Post by: Waspy on 18 March 2016, 16:18
Long time guys, hope you and your mk2s are all well!

Had the clutch replaced today at a local garage I trust. They just called to say it's done but they have a problem with the clutch peddle not returning. They have asked me to come and look at it tomorrow.

Is this a common issue after a new clutch? Is there something I should be looking for? Advice appreciated as always

does it have an auto adjust cable ?
as they can bind up similar to MK3  ....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiyox3Px5GQ

or maybe this ....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCyMFfRPZJM

good luck

Did they put the clutch assembly back together the right way? It goes in backwards!

I have no idea if they put it in the right way or not...

How will I tell? And more to the point, can I prove it?! Don't want to pay another 4 hours labour to find out...

And it's a manual cable changed a year ago

Okay so he showed me everything today. He also showed me the old clutch on the bench, looks like it would be very hard to fit backwards! No impossible, but hard.

The problem is that the clutch lever is too far from the release bearing. So it's trying to push it, but can't if you see what I mean. They are gunna put a spacer inbetween the lever and bearing to make it drive. But I'm not happy at all!

You really can't get anymore straight forward than fitting a clutch to a Mk2! its either the wrong kit, or they have fitted it wrong, get them to sort it properly!

I only sent it to a garage because I don't have time atm to be working on the car. I provided the clutch unfortunately (had it lying round so thought I would save the parts cost) but that gives the garage an out. They are just blaming the clutch, which I am almost certain is the correct one. It's a Sachs. I'll get it back and find/make time to sort it out myself.

I need to find a decent VW specialist locally for future stuff.

Got the car back today and it drives fine. Bite point is much lower obviously, which is nice.

However, the shift throw is now WAY longer. As in the distance the gear lever travels from 1-2 etc. I'm confused why this has changed. Purely as an FYI I did all the linkages 2 years ago.

Just doesn't seem as tight now...

Make sure the 13mm nut is tight on the linkage. Mine wasnt and the throw was horrible. Eventually lost gears. Tightened it and jobs a goodun now

Yeah when I said it goes on backwards, I ment as in it re-assembles backwards. Normally (on most cars) the flywheel goes on first (closest to engine) and the clutch assembly goes on after. On the olde golf its the clutch assembly that goes closest to the engine and the flywheel bolts to the clutch. However if that problem is somewhat cured then no sleepless night!

If you did your linkages yourself 2 year since did you use the alignment tool? Have you still got it? Could you not just do the alignment again, yourself?

I didn't use an alognment tool, just managed to get it right by luck I guess haha.

I'm just going to do them all again (full linkage). It's an easy job, overkill maybe, but I'm not bothered

What was wrong with the clutch then?

Neither me, nor the garage know what was wrong.

It was like the rod was too short (didn't look badly worn), so they added a spacer (half an old release bearing) to effectively extend it. Like I say, it doesn't sit well with me, but it seems to drive well, other than sloppy gear linkages.

the small clutch levers that go against the release bearing have a habit of cracking which makes the pedal not return. but in saying that, when they crack they don't normally work again even with a spacer fitted. I know someone who had the same issue a couple of years back. to fix it they took out the push rod, cut it in half and put a small ball bearing in between the 2 halfs
