So my GTD leaves me in September and I'm looking at Leasing a Golf R in metallic Black
Whats your opinion looks wise with the R having Chrome wing mirrors on a black car and would you or did you buy the exterior mirrors in carbon fibre to complete the black look? £450 is a lot just for aesthetics I know
Or anything you must have or wouldn't have based on my probable spec below?
My spec would be:
5 door manual
Deep Black
Keyless
Rear view camera
DCC
19" Pretoria wheels
Tinted 90% glass
Thanks all
-
just wrap the mirrors if need be! in carbon look a like!
-
I'd give the 90% tints a miss for a start.
-
Why don't you like the tints? I think they look great.
-

The 95% tints are just too dark. One thing to remember about the really dark tints are that it doesn't let the auto dimming rear view mirror to work right so the side mirror doesn't dim enough or at all.
-
Hang on, the external mirrors are supposed to dim too?

I hated the extra tint on the Ed35 for this reason and also the the show up any minute scratch
I had a set of primed mirror caps wrapped

I think they look tacky as hell but if you like the drug dealer look, go for it

The tint option is mainly for the kids when they're in the back so its for practical reasons rather than looks

I love it, drop me a pm if you need anything for the weekend

That's pretty much a perfect spec - apart from one glaring omission - DSG! I'd scrap the 90% tints on a 5dr DBP. It works to great effect on some colours but is just too much on black IMO. I have a kid and the 65% standard rear tint is fine. And if not, there's something called sunglasses!
Couple of pics to show the standard rear tint. The first pic gives you an idea of how much light gets cut out with the 65% tint. You can see looking at the white Fiesta ST behind, comparing it through the front windows and the tinted rears.

I was uncertain at first about the brushed silver wing mirrors on black but really like them now. Unless you want the uber stealth look in which case go for black mirror caps - but again 90% tint would still look too much and into tacky territory on this colour, especially in 3dr.

As said the standard privacy tints on the 'B ' pillar back are fine imo but the 90% tints just look tacky.
-
Ah thanks Booth11 - will re-evaluate the tints then and looking at your pics the wing mirrors look good as well
-
+1 for 65% glass on a black car, the 90% would be too much, maybe ok on a white/silver/red.
I also used to dislike the silver mirror covers but they have grown on me and makes the R stand out.
Spotted a 16 plate DBP 5 door R yesterday as above with prets and it was stunning
-
I did think I'd go with the 90% tints on my next Golf, but having seen one, it makes it look like a van, especially when the car is black.
As for the R's silver mirrors, I'd do something about that if I had one, I think it makes it look cheap - especially with certain colours, such as TR.
I'd either be looking for a colour match or go with a carbon wrap.
-
The 95% tints are just too dark. One thing to remember about the really dark tints are that it doesn't let the auto dimming rear view mirror to work right so the side mirror doesn't dim enough or at all.
The side mirrors don't dim its just the interior mirror and the 90% tints don't affect the dimming at all.
My Mrs has the 90% tints and its not total black out as you can clearly see in it.
Not the best of picture but it still looks like its just tinted rather than full on black.
But like absolutely everything about a car it's totally subjective.
Get what "you" want

I couldn't agree more, just have them body coloured.
My white van has got black door mirrors and nobody thinks they look cool 😀

My GTD will be at end of its lease not too soon after yours and will be sad farewell really as truly love it.
But nice out of the box new is kinda fun in the choosing so embracing that at moment and have pretty much narrowed myself down to three options:
Golf R
Golf GTI (PP)
New Tiguan R Line
So interesting that you have decided to go for the R from the GTD.
Firstly I would choose Pure White on all those listed above as its a great colour for enhancing features and keeps really well throughout a year, you only know how dirty it really is when wash it.
Love blinging shining black, but would avoid black totally from previous experience of Plain and Metallic as you truly have to maintain it so much to avoid the dusty/dullness, swirls and highlighted bird mess.
Love Lapiz Blue but given have to park on road the white is more understated to the uninitiated, so as much as like the attention, it screams R too much perversely.
As for the 90% tints, definitely in the consensus here as the standard tints are perfect, easily noticed as contrast on my GTD but with some subtlety to.
On the Black Paint think you are in danger of taking the sophistication of the R into Corsa racer boy territory opposed to stealth look maybe seeking - as with all these things my subjective personal opinion.
Think the most interest that have in you moving from GTD to R is how feel on fuel consumption, as its a big leap from a GTD.
Obviously know the MK 7 Golf well now and so know that either a GTI or an R will make me very happy, it really will be down to how much fuel consumption willing to give into for that little extra
The new Tiguan looks great though in R Line form and has lots of MK 7 tech and interior feel as well as that LCD/HUD display. It also has 4 Motion and GTD power unit, so its a tempting, hugely sensible package
5 door manual - 5 door is a must if carry passengers as biggest pain ever in 3 door - DSG convert, cannot imagine not having it, DSG and Auto Hold are the perfect partners
Deep Black - Not for me for reason stated
Keyless - Not got at present, would likely spec now though
Rear view camera - Sensors are more than fine for me,
DCC - Total convert, maybe a must on R with Pretorias
19" Pretoria wheels - The best looking wheel on the R
Tinted 90% glass - Would totally avoid.
Must adds for my next are the Apple Car Play and if not standard winter pack for the heated seats
-
I'd love to have the GTD again as IMO its the nicest looking car as standard out of the GTI and R - but even with the GTi spec'd up to look nice (hate the standard alloys and much prefer the GTD chrome trim over red) I'd rather go for the R as private lease deals for R's are hard to turn down currently.
Recent quotes show I can get the GTI or R with more specs than my GTD for £20 less than what I'm paying now (yes, our car scheme is a rip off plus the BIK of course) so my thinking is, going from a GTD to an R - just do it whilst I have the means, no real science behind it as I won't always be able to have this choice.
I do mainly short trips in the GTD as well and the regens are averaging 3 a week so as well as not doing the GTD much good my MPG is averaging just below 40; so I'm not even thinking about this by moving all the way up to an R
I am very tempted with white as the colour too as I've seen very few MK7s in that colour around here, but I think I would be cleaning it more than black.
My wife is frowning at the thought of me behind a 300PS car as nice as it is and if I cave then it will be another GTD in carbon grey and 19s but for now my sights are set on the R

Sorry I thought the Mk7 had door mirror tinting as well, that seems a bit cheap by VW
Obviously 90% tints aren't totally black, if they were then totally black then they would be 100%
If you don't have dimming side mirrors then you probably would notice the difference that having a tinted rear window makes. I noticed the difference it makes after I had a loan of a CC without rear tints and the door mirror when down to almost completely black where as in my CC which has tints it only dims to about 50% with the same car(close neighbor with one of those HID kits that blinds everyone) behind me.

Re. the aforementioned MPG going from GTD to R. I made that jump in December last year. In the GTD I was mainly doing short journeys where the car was barely warming up, yet I was still getting very high 30s on average, even more if I tried. Doing the same journeys in the R and I'm lucky to get over 20mpg, in fact I quite often see 16 - 17mpg. On a long 140 mile motorway run I struggled to better 32mpg. So I'm spending well over twice as much on fuel.

Rebecca, this photo shows a stunning example of a perfectly detailed car. Beautiful!
Would you like to prep my GTi, when it finally arrives?

That's pretty much where I am at, expected to do quite a few long distance hauls to certain offices but one role change later and tend to do short to medium mostly now with 39-43 MPG averages (55 MPG on last 190 mile return trip to Manchester) which is pretty decent and so what you stated does really concern me as your journeys seem similar to mine and 20 MPG could/would soon take the gloss off any satisfaction that maybe getting from performance.
Rarely have change to take the GTD to its limits (which is pretty decent I think) so have toyed with just specifying a new GTD but given reduced mileage the GTI is now nudging ahead of the pack due to the MPG concerns of the R - Saw a brand new out of the box GTI (PP) in Milton Keynes Saturday in CSG and turned my head, a real looker
Could live with early 30's as the average MPG but seems the R would fall pretty short of that when doing the short runs (next town type thing, soon to be pub gardens) that mainly do these days from your comments and more food for though
At present my (today) my 4 cars in order of preference are:
GTI in CSG (PP) (The GTD was the perfect compromise for me, but with reduced mileage the GTI stands clear)
Tiguan - R Line (Need to physically see one, if looks as good in flesh as photos, then may win out)
R (Love everything about the R with Pretoria, and would accept even average MPG, but R goes too far from what understand)
GTD (Perfect Car really, but need to be doing at least 15 k a year for that tag to be true not my now 8-10k)

Considered GTE?
-
Considered GTE?
Not really considered electric maybe as park the car on a road and charging would be impossible.
Colleague has recently collected the new Lexus RC hybrid and having been out in it, it has pretty decent off the line performance and sleeking around silently in electric in town did catch more than a few pedestrian off guard as went to walk into our path.
Personally did not like the cabin too much though its a nice car, was not swayed by the hybrid or the Lexus.
The GTI and the Tiguan are still the front runners but as have swayed pretty much daily there still might be some Spring madness and a f*ck it as select the R still. The choosing period is the Kid in the Candy Store time

Thanks Talk-torque. I would gladly prep your GTI, but I barely get time to do my own! Are you skipping the dealer prep and doing it yourself?

That is a for sure! I have your methods & materials all ready to act on, once my GTi appears. I want a show car this time. The hard work begins!

Golf R now ordered, I went quite basic to keep the lease costs down, and compared to my company salary sacrifice scheme for my GTD I will be saving just over £100 a month with the R on a private lease
My only hesitation was going for manual as no demos were available in manual, but i've felt the peddles in a showroom R and they felt quite soft, so going from the GTD pedals to an R will just take a little bit of getting used to.
Ordered Golf R, 5dr manual, pearl black, dyanudio & keyless
-
I have just ordered a 3dr DSG R in Reflex Silver with the only additional options being the 90% tint windows and Car Net App.
The 90% tints have been spec'd as we use the car to carry the dog about and also my bikes which are expensive so the less prying eyes can see in the better.
If YOU like them get them as there will always be someone online who will have a differing perspective.

That's something that I have to weigh up, can take the ££ and private lease or go via the company route and lease through the company they have procured.
Advantages of the internal lease is:
You do not pay insurance (do you still have the £100 saving when factor in insurance?)
If all goes wobbly and you have to leave you just hand the keys back and not left with expensive lease.
All finances are managed internally
You literally just select model, have delivered and then drive it, everything else aside from fuel is covered.
You get a certain allowance and there is allowance to top up to a certain value out of own pocket. At present have the GTD and get money back also and have had a recent one category lift hence the R is considered.
Thing is, have pretty much settled on this specification and think it may push the finances. See all the below as essential and a non option, to not option!
Golf R - 5 Door - DSG
Deep Black Pearl
Pretoria
DCC
Winter Pack
Apple Connect
If can stretch to but doubt.
Key less
Rear Camera
Even though 95% set on the R just waiting to see what can actually specify on the face lift A3 - Have talked myself out of the Tiguan as basically still want some fun in my drive and not ready to retire just yet and the R gives me both.
-
I have also joined the club with ordering an R. I didn't specify the 90% Tints, but did spec pretty much everything else including the Carbon Fibre Mirror Caps as my R will be Oryx White with PRetorias and felt it would look the part. I know they are expensive for what they are. But I plan on keeping it for a while and feel like a pre-mid life crisis. I share your sentiments, life is short you cannot take your money with you when you are gone, and when your old you cannot enjoy as much. When I am old, I do not want to regret never doing something when I was able to.
-
I'm getting a R too.....
Volkswagen Golf R 5dr DSG

Gloss Black Mirror's
19" Pretoria Alloy Wheels
Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC)
Panoramic Sunroof
DynAudio Sound System
Car App Net Connect (Apple CarPlay)

Winter Pack
Rear 90% Tinted Windows
4 year extended warranty
PCP Service Pack
GAP Return to Invoice

I always love the "extended warranty" on here.
Everyone says "I plan on keeping this car for a good many years"
And how many of us do?
Two years down the line we've signed for something else shiny and new...
:embarrassed:
I got the three year service pack on my last (2013) GTI thinking I'd have it until the ED40 came out at least - I got one service out of it not three!!
This time round I didn't take any service packs or extended warranties hoping that sod's law rules worked as they should and I do actually keep the car for a good few years.

So true, Polo has had three and my R might, on the rental I think it will be one on longlife
-
Argh I have been rumbled!
I have actually specified the 4 Year Warranty on my next car and was trying to get hold of the dealer to change it to a 5 year warranty as intend to keep hold of the car longer this time as have a lot of expensive out goings over next couple of years such as doing my Master of Arts course, etc,. I like to do a cash purchase for a car, but saving up for one will be delayed this time.
However I suspect once I get the money saved the itch will start and I will start getting the wandering eye for my next purchase. It's a weakness I'll admit it.
We all say it with all good intentions though.
-
I agree with the 95s bein too dark esp at night as for the chrome g mirror caps I'd give em a miss :lipsrsealed: but hey wot do I know lol

My company scheme is a salary sacrifice so I pay insurance as part of the lease package which is in a ridiculous cost bracket, around 250-300% more than a private insurance quote I checked for the GTD.
I've done the maths and total cost if I was to get a GTD now through this scheme would cost me slightly over £100 more a month than going private for an R, this factors in Insurance, fully maintained, company allowance, BIK etc....
If I leave I foot the bill on the current scheme so in my circumstances everything pointed me in the direction of going private.

Understand now and yes, private makes total sense under those conditions, which are not really attractive at all really and the £100 saving proves that, as £3600 over 3 years is a lot of money.
Not been able to do the full numbers on mine yet, still going through paperwork so can have the quote system opened up to me for the internal lease.
Unless the best deal that can get privately is ridiculously good including my insurance costs that would incur, the likelihood is that will just use the company lease as its so stress free as even if car gets dinged you just ring a number and they manage it all for you.
But you done it now, and good for you! and having now buried my sensible head on economy hope to be saying signed up to the R Club myself in a few weeks
