Title: Dealers desperate to do a deal...
Post by: JBirchy on 10 March 2016, 13:22
Hi Chaps/Chapesses,

Just had the dealer I bought my GTI from ring and ask if I'm interested in changing for a new one (2yrs into a 4yr PCP deal).

He was dead honest and said they're desperate for sales before the end of Q1, and also running really low on used stock of the performance models. As a result, they're looking to offer a mega deal of some kind.

Not sure I want another GTI, but may be interested in an R hatch, or a Passat Bi-TDI Wagon.

Of course, I'll see what they have to say and report back soon enough!

Jon

Be interesting to see how "mega" the deal is. Make sure you compare it to an online broker.

Also, as per any other good deal/bargain, it is only so if you were going to buy one anyway.

Which dealer? Mine wouldn't entertain any kind of deal at all last month.

Absolutely true, and if I'm totally honest I'm not sure I would. I'm mainly talking to them to fully understand the situation I'm in with my current deal and how much the trade in value of my car has tumbled in the recent VW scandal.

Having said that, my car is just about to have it's final service under the service pack, it is soon to need 4 new tyres and some front discs and pads, so I suppose there is an argument to say that it might be a good time to change, providing the numbers stack up. Although, the car I really want is an estate with a decent petrol motor (not keen on the Golf R Wagon - looking at a 3-Series/Audi A4 size wagon).

The dealer in question is Liverpool VW. To be fair, they matched the DrivetheDeal price of 13% discount when I ordered my current car, so it would be interesting to see how they can find their way around an attractive deal this time around, given the inevitable negative equity I'll be in thanks to low p/x values....

I'll report back on Monday.

My dealer was very keen to get an order over the weekend which ended me ordering my next golf on Monday. My 3 year deal was coming to it's end so it made sense. Upgrading to a R this time. They had a car on order and changed the spec to what I wanted and it's BW14. I'm happy with the level of discount.

So what an utter disappointment. Cutting to the chase, no deal. However it is the way I was treated by the dealer which has annoyed me the most...

The guy who phoned me on Friday definitely booked me in for an appointment, and also said they would give my car a free wash and vac, usually £15. I'd said to him that I thought I was in some negative equity so I didn't think they could put a decent deal together, but he assured me that they were really keen to do a deal so they could probably swallow the negative equity and put further dealer/finance contributions in place to make the numbers work. I said I'd be surprised, but he convinced me to make an appointment.

I turned up at the dealer today and they had no record of the appointment, but I explained the conversation to the sales guy who was introduced to me so we sat down at his desk and I said the only car I'd realistically be interested in was an R, and that I wanted to maintain the spec level of my GTI but with the Pretoria Alloys and Metallic paint (Certainly no offer of a wash and vac which had been booked in). I'd configured one online which had a list price of £38,230. He clearly didn't know a lot about the cars, no idea about the options either. Told me he'd only been there a couple of weeks but as I knew exactly what I wanted I didn't think it would matter. I showed him the printout of the Drivethedeal price (£32,417) and he shrugged it off, saying they wouldn't take my GTI in p/x so it wasn't really a factor.

He was really trying to discourage me from adding any extras, as that would mean it would be a factory build car, and that would be no good (I wanted Tech pack, Keyless, Reversing Cam, DCC, Prets). He said that would be the highest spec R he'd seen and that it would be expensive.

He then took my key and went to inspect my GTI for it's p/x valuation. After a long wait, he came back and basically said I owe £3k negative equity, lumped on to a £38,230 car so basically if I put £1500 in, it would be £652 per month. No discount, no contributions. List price, that's it.

I think he knew they were so far out but I just wish the guy who rang on Friday had looked into it a bit more... (He was from a telesales team who work for the garage)

I told him of my displeasure and that I'd wasted an hour out of a busy day for nothing. His parting line was that I should go back in 12 months or so when hopefully the equity has balanced out a bit, as they would hate to lose me as a VW customer.

So a bit disappointing. I knew the equity situation wasn't great thanks to the terrible p/x values and the fact I put a really small deposit into the PCP, but still i wish they'd had treated me a little better. I certainly won't be going back to that dealer anytime soon (Lightcliffe VW Liverpool).

Sounds like your telesales guy did his job and got you into the dealership to try & boost sales.

You just wonder how many other customers made 'appointments' on a similar basis.

Really annoying that it didn't result in an order for you.

Over the years I've had the 'special deals weekend' invites with ' senior people ' being present on site to give extra special deals ! etc.etc..

From experience its sometimes 'Pack' cars being discounted heavily so not normally new factory builds but models already specced and in the system.

Never had a 'personal' approach by phone and unless it was from a sales person who I had personally dealt with and trusted I probably wouldn' bother.

Oh I can tell you some bad things about Lightcliffe VW Liverpool and I would never buy a car from them, new or used. They get bad reviews on the net

On the other hand I have heard good things about Corkhills in Wigan - may be worth a talk to when you decide to take the plunge...

I bought a 10 month old Golf Mk 4 Match from Corkhills about 12 yrs ago.
The previous owner had managed to put a cig burn right in the middle of the drivers seat cushion
They changed the seat for a brand new one, no hassle at all.
I'd use them

The only contact I've had with my dealer was last year, they called me up saying that as I was an existing owner then they can do me a fantastic deal. I declined the offer as I had only collected my car 10 days before!

Interesting one that, I might give them a try. I now take my car to Lookers in Preston for its maintenance, and their customer service has been fantastic. Their sales team have spoken to me, but were quite honest about the fact I'm too soon into my PCP agreement to change. I'll certainly give them a try though (although to be quite honest, it looks like my next car will be from BMW).

I live in Wigan so Corkills were my first port of call when looking to buy as I had a V6 4Motion from there a good few years back. To say the salesman was an arse is an understatement. As we walked away my wife actually said "I dont care if it costs us a £1000 more, we are not buying a car from that cock". He actually accused me of lying despite having a DTD printout. Try Chris at Inchscape at Bolton, he was the complete opposite and deals with their Carwow stuff. Pleasure to deal with. Though I haven't had the car long enough to try out servicing dept and no cause to return the car for anything.
I suppose each to their own, different day same salesman different result maybe. Who knows.

^^ Funny that, Inchcape in Bolton was the first dealer I looked at after I'd decided I was buying a MK7. I rang and made an appointment, turned up to view/test drive a car and the salesman who I spoke to wasn't available. One of the other sales staff told me to come back another time, as nobody would be available for a couple of hours. I explained that I was ready to place an order and he simply wasn't interested. Needless to say I never did go back.
