My MIB 2 (standard) unit has become unresponsive in around a quarter of the journey's I have made it in since new.
An example would be when playing media through the SD card, I cannot return back to the album selection (icons at the top left of the screen when in media). Another example is the hard buttons around the screen do not respond to inputs.
Usually a 10 second hold of the power button sorts it out. But this is something I would not expect of a new car.
Has anyone experienced this?
Cheers

no crashes..but it stubbornly refuses to automatically give me an icon for planet rock, all my others have appeared fine!

I think thats the radio station rather than the head unit.
It won't give us an icon for Absolute90s and some other station which I can't remember.
Adladdy if its happening as regular as you say it will be easy to demonstrate it to the dealer.
-
I was amused to find out it would read texts as well!
-
Try recording it on your phone and show it to the dealer coz you know it'll work fine when you try and demonstrate the problem to the dealer.
-
Thanks for the advice guys.
I managed to record it on the phone. Got it booked in this afternoon at the dealers. I think the right hand selector wheel on the unit is slightly faulty, or has a software bug linked to the wheel. The reason being is when in media mode, the tracks keep cycling through as if the wheel is spinning. I don't think the buttons on the wheel are faulty, but I won't rule them out.

My MIB 2 has totally crashed. Was fine on Wednesday night and then yesterday it started up with the VW logo, crackled with no radio stations and went blank. This repeated itself 5 times and then the unit is dead. No chance of a hard reset (which I've done once before) as it doesn't stay on long enough. The variable sound / speed ratio has been playing up for the last few days, so it was maybe on its way out then. I have it booked in with the dealer for next Tuesday. No tunes, Nav & rear camera is no good!

Courtesy of another forum I appear to have found what may be a solution when my car goes into the dealers (unless the unit is totally U.S.)

It says:
"December 15, 2015
91N9 UPDATE – MIB2 MQB Modular Infotainment System Software Update (NVLW) –
USA Only"

I had this same fault, the unit tries to reboot itself a few times and then just gives up, I had the Radio/control unit replaced today which I believe is the unit in the glovebox withe they'd player and sd card in and it fixed the problem, luckily under warranty as the service report showed it was over £2.5k!

Pompey - How long were you between diagnosis and the new unit being fitted? I'm at the dealers Tues afternoon for diagnosis.

They suspected the unit was faulty on pick up but I reported the total failure on the 14th March and James at JCB emailed me on the 15th to say the unit was in! I was shocked as I expected a long wait! Hope you get your sorted as quickly as I did as this unit controls so much.
-
Yes Pompey I have exactly the same diagnosis from the dealer as you - could even look at a software update as the unit is just in a perpetual state of flux. New glovebox unit on order and provisionally booked in for Thursday afternoon fitting. Oh it will be so good to get me tunes etc. back in time for Easter! Another £2,500 cost to VW as well!!
-
That's good that you are getting it fixed quickly. Positive I took from the experience is that I know my car has no squeaks or rattles!

Update from my crashing unit;
Recap- MIB2 unit 'beeping' and screen unresponsive ONLY in MEDIA using the SD card. Occasionally the screen works, but the screen icons that return back to the SD card's top level (icons in the top left of the screen) do not work.
Northampton VW took the unit back and gave it a thorough testing. I spoke to the mechanic who performed the tests and there's no denying he has done everything to try to replicate the issue. He put the issue down to a faulty SD card, seeing as the issue only occurs in the MEDIA section using the SD card.
To counter this, I spent a few hours deleting files I thought were corrupt whilst reformating the card. I've also used another SD card that I know is 100% working and reliable. So far the unit has crashed twice in around 12 journeys in the car using the old card.
Tonight I shall perform a hard 20 second reset of the unit with the '100% working and reliable card'.
Does anyone else have issues with SD cards?
Getting slightly annoying now. It's been back twice with this issue. I'm a music nut (hence speccing Dynaudio) and not having my music accessible through the SD card is seriously annoying.
Some videos of the issue can be found here; https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=D2B494622FBCA77F!3190&authkey=!AIV13lkvSOH2LFc&ithint=folder%2cmp4
Slightly frustrated- Unsure whether to just accept the issue and not use the SD card function rather than have it looked at.

Pompey - having the Sport & Sound pack is the only thing that's kept me going in these miles without a media unit.

Just watched your videos, I can feel your frustration. That would drive me mad.
I've had something similar but it was when it was -4 outside and just put it down to these units not liking the cold.
If the car is under warranty I certainly wouldn't be just accepting not to use the SD card.
When its playing up like that and you remove the card does the problem go away?
I wouldn't be using that card at all even after formatting it.
I've had a few SD cards that has brought my PC to its knees so yeah I would say its possible.
Have you tried running the unit on just the radio, ipod, or even a portable hard drive for a prolonged period to see if the problems come back. Then do the same with the dodgy SD card in the slot. That should narrow it down for you.
-
Where did you buy the SD card from? I know some people that have bought 128gb cards for less than £30 and they then wonder why they have problems.
Yes it is possible that a card can corrupt what it is put into and depending what is on the card just removing it might not sort the problem out.

Thanks for the comments guys!
Some responses;
1. When it plays up, and I take the card out, the problem does not go away (frustratingly). I have to hold the power down for a hard reset.
2. The radio/android auto/bluetooth etc are not affected at all. It only occurs in the MEDIA SD CARD area. Some of my colleagues have just said "don't use SD cards".... thanks guys, not much help!
3. The SD card was from Amazon (official Amazon shop, not a supplier). I bought two of the cards at the same time and I currently have one in my phone. The phone one has worked perfectly, which actually annoys me abit. You hear of dodgy cards all the time, so it really could be an issue with the card, but it's so temperamental and difficult to repeat.
4. I have a 7 year old SDHD card which is reliable as old boots. Had that in for the past few days and trying to replicate the issue (so far it's behaving itself). As soon as the unit has issues with this card, I'll be on the phone to VW.
Right now I'm giving VW the benefit of the doubt with the 'it's your SD card' comments until the reliable card sees issues.
-
I'd definitely lean towards it being the card since that seems to be the common denominator.
Does it happen when the card is in but you are on a different source?
When you say you bought the 2 cards at the same time and 1 is in your phone, it is an SD card you are using and not a microSD with an adapter?
I was reading the other week that Amazon were caught out with certain suppliers and certain memory cards it was selling was fake. Not their marketplace sellers but Amazon themselves. Not saying that is what is up with yours as cards can just become corrupted but just to be aware that because its Amazon itself its not a definite original.

MIB 2 control unit placed yesterday afternoon in just over an hour by the dealer. So good to have some banging tunes on the radio to drive home to after just over a week of nothing. Will get all my settings input back in later today, but so pleased to have it all back in order for the weekend sir!
-
So it looks like it could be the card, however.....
Got in the car this morning and there instantly was an 'SD card read error' message on the unit. The driver screen unit between the dials was completely black! I turned off the car, got out, got in, turned on, still black. I nipped out to the shops and on the return trip the screen worked. Seeing the dealerthis afternoon..... Sick of these intermittent electrical faults. Not happy at VW.....
-
Sounds like an absolute pain that really needs sorting. Sadly, some dealers are not exactly proactive when it comes to solving "difficult" problems. You may have to resort to contacting Milton Keynes. Whatever, don't put up with crap like this. I reckon you've done enough trying to sort it yourself.
-
Although VW Northampton have been helpful, but they're refusing to act unless there is an error message. Just nipped out to the shops and the SD card music issue surfaced again... This is the 3rd SD card I've used, so pretty certain it's not the SD card anymore.
How do you contact MK VW headquarters? I'd really like the unit replacing now, because there isn't an error message and there are still issues!!
-
I've not had personal experience of them, but I have heard that @VWUKHelp on Twitter can assist. I'm sure someone on here will have contacts at MK and may know better ways of getting attention. Do hope you get it sorted quickly. These things get under your skin, don't they?
