Title: Wheel Spacers !!!!! yup again lol
Post by: gtiaps on 08 March 2016, 19:50
hi all my names Neil.... blah blah blah lol

im new to the gti but not to modding clubs n forums etc use to show a focus all over the uk with my own club but the focus has gone my a3 going leaves that leaves the scirocco and the gti thats on order.

anyways that bit covered as stated my gti is on its way slowly i have read nearly as much spacer info on the mark 7 and to be honest with no definitive yes this is best or better i was going to do 20mms all round that bolt to the hub pros n cons regarding the bolts holding them to the hub, then theres the bolt thru " longer bolts" thinking this could be better.... and im looking to use `15mm rear 10mm fronts being the gti i have gone with the 19" santis ...

its not getting lowered been there done that killed the t shirt.. its staying standard apart from the spacers just for looks more than anything else,,, no track no doughnuts in car parks { although my grand kids mite like it lol but no ;-)... ) so just looking for a good straight up reply regarding 15s and 10s for a stance view...

thanks in advance,,, Neil

Welcome to the forum Neil.
I don't know whether it's my age but I barely understood 50% of your post due to use of text speak.
I'm sure some younger members on here will be able to decipher it though

I've read that 3 times and I'm still not sure what you are asking?

Is this any help? https://www.ecstuning.com/News/VW_MKVII_GTI_ECS_Flush_Kit_2015/

hi Bungleaio

as it says i was thinking of going 20mm spacers all round that bolt to the hubs.

but other posts state 15mm rear 10mm front supplied with the longer bolts that hold the wheel through the spacer to the hubs are about the correct width for a better looking stance without and rubbing issues etc..

hope that helps
regards neil

I was considering 15mm on the back and 10mm on the front but must admit the ecd flush kit looks immense!

Just had a look at that link and it really looks the business.
I might be tempted  :undecided:

Do these really make that much difference? I looked at the link and the wheels do fill the arches a bit better but I don't get it - I haven't noticed much of a problem with my car. Is there anything other than aesthetics?

yeah does look the part but still its a bolt thru meaning 5 extra length bolts holding wheel and spacer to hub im not apposed to this idea but 15 rear and 10 fronts the way to go with 19in santis,,,

cheers neil

Okay, thanks. $180 seems quite a bit for not a lot. For me that is, not knocking what others like

yeah true each to their own thats how it should be,,, been on with a guy owns a performance parts place near tamworth van do 15mm and 12mm spacers in adonised  black with 20 long radius bolts to suit gen vw wheels and locking bolts for 90 quid thinking hes my route.

That sounds more reasonable. I think my next mod could be a pedalbox though depending what my (thieving ba***rd) insurance company says.

when I was running standard wheels I fitted 12mm front and 16mm rear.
The fronts were probably as wide as you could go and at the back I reckon you could go as far as 20mm but 16 looked pretty good.

Does fitting spacers make the car drive/steer differently at all ?

On some cars it will, for example fitting spacers to the rear will make it turn in a bit sharper and to the front only it'll be the reverse of that.
But up to about 15mm on a lardy Golf 7 it'll make no difference.
It just looks so much better.
Surprisingly better.

I did it on my Edi35 and never regretted it. I think there's a thread somewhere under user name Ginge35Edition.

I am running 8mm at the moment on the R (which is lowered) and a huge improvement with the stock prets which looked a little lost.

I have H&R hubcentrics on the rear which are nice and light, the front are integrated into the VWR brake kit

hey up wigit..
thanks for your input may i ask on your rears are they the bolt to bud type or you just got longer wheel bolts so your still using 5 bolts per wheel not 10??

Iirc anything over 5mm require longer bolts?

you not had any problems with the longer bolts??? radius i assume?? i wasnt 100 sure which way to go if i put 20s on the rear bolt on or straight through..

but just reading what other ppl have put bought used it seems 15mm on the rear and 10mm fronts with longer radius bolts seems to be about right.... just need a good oem locking bolt lol ;-)

for me i have never been a fan but need the front to clear the VWR brake callipers so have to even things out

so far so good was impressed with the H&Rs, the VWR spacer is a spigot that locates in the bell and held by two screws which is rather neat

Just wanted to check, is that right?

I don't believe rear spacers will improve turn in, its not like an anti roll bar at the rear.  Front spacers will increase track width and grip at the front. Rear spacers on there own will likely increase understeer on our cars, as you are widening the track at the rear axle = increasing grip, but not the front.

Or have I got that wrong?  Either way you probably won't notice it...

I've not studied the science of it all but back in the day when Golf GTI's became under powered tubs of lard and some of us still wanted cheap hot hatch frills we moved on to SEAT Cupras.
Putting a set of 15 or 20mm spacers on the back of a mk2 or mk3 Ibiza had the effect of a) looking much better b ) made the initial turn in a bit sharper and c) made it slightly less stable at very high speeds.
Aside from the looks issue the other effects were minimal.
And those that fitted huge brakes for track use had to use spacers to fit the brakes behind the stock wheels - if they didn't also fit rear spacers to balance it up they generally reported that turn in was less sharp but the car tended to track more straight on fast straight sections.

Maybe that's all scientifically wrong but that's the feeling from the drivers seat and being as these cars had mostly Golf chassis that'll do me!
