I hope this is ok to ask on here but I've got my GTD arriving next month and I want to get a decent dash cam, I'm just wondering if anyone else is using one and if so what are they using??
I've been looking at this blackvue one http://www.blackvue.eu/Blackvue_DR750LW-2ch.php
-
I use a Mobius and attach it the dashboard with magnets. It's rechargeable which means I don't have to connect it to the cigarette lighter or wire it in. Go on YouTube and type in Mobius+techmoan.
-
I use the Blackvue DR500GW and wired it into the fuse box. Never had any problems with it and gives a nice clear picture. I have use of another car so got an extra bracket and lead so can use in both cars.
-
I had a Blackvue 650 system on my car for about a week. For 4 days it worked great, it was nice and compact with excellent daytime and very good night-time footage - then it started making funny noises in use and playing up. Basically it overheated, as many of these do when left on continuously for parking monitoring purposes. It went back for refund.
-
I use an RAC05, which has pretty good resolution, plus gives speed camera warnings. Marketed on behalf of RAC by ProofCam, who have been very good at responding quickly to a couple of queries I have had.
Can definitely recommend it - in fact I ended up buying a second one for our other car!
-
I use a mini 0805 directly wired into the fuse box.
So far so good.
-
Just ordered a MINI 0826, should be here soon.
I think the problem is that you can find negative reviews for any of the cameras for sale, so choosing the "correct" one is difficult.
-
bet these are std in cars soon! fitted into the mirror
-
Every time I see one of these dash cam threads I keep thinking "I must get one ASAP" then see so many different recommendations it just confuses me so I never get round to it.
I do like the idea of the camera that can be recharged at home and just mounted in the car using battery back up so it can be used in several vehicles.
-
If you have one with a battery in it you will only end up forgetting to charge it or leaving it another car.
I had a road hawk HD in my previous car which was good but is too bulky to fit in my golf as I've got the lane assist stuff behind my rear view mirror.
I think I'm going to go for one of these though, it looks tiny. Good quality footage. No GPS but I'm not all that bothered by that anyway. http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2013/7/8/the-mobius-camera-the-do-it-all-mount-anywhere-1080p-micro-c.html

Is there a reason why manufacturers don't offer dashcams / rearcams as part of the specification? I'd have thought as a factory fitted option it would be very popular and surely the technology isn't difficult. It would avoid the faff of after-market fitting too.
Bubba.

Anyone got a Road Angel Halo? Front and rear cameras but all the wiring puts me off!

If i had to take a guess its because it is still relatively unreliable tech with high failure rates (relatively, for electronics). They all run pretty hot.

I recently had some money left on an Amazon gift card and fancied using one. Anyway I basically bought one of the cheapest possible one I could find. The model is GS8000L and comes from various manufacturers and cost me £13.50 but had to buy a separate 32GB SD card at around £7.
I posted a short loop of how it performs. It is advertised as full HD but I found that it seemed to work too hard in that mode and works best at 720p, plus you get near 4 hours on the SD card. Also bear in mind it is in my Corrado G60 with near non-existent suspension. I fitted an another cigarette lighter socket hooked up to a 12v ignition feed behind the dash and fed the wire up the A-pillar and along the head lining so it begins to record once power is fed to it. The internal battery is quite poor but no big deal really. Motion stability is turned off. Sound is quite poor, seems to pick up the noise of the lense but overall a decent bit of kit for the money. It is quite small and compact too.

Been looking at what options there were myself after someone pulled out on the wife and she ended up writing off her car recently.
In this instance there was no problems with the 3rd party who accepted full liability, it made me think of cameras - my requirements would be...
1. Small - the smaller the better.
2. No screen - what's the point, you're hardly going to want to playback there and then.
3. Cheap - I'm tight!!

...and wondered if anyone had used something similair?

Not bad, would have been better if you had cleared your windscreen earlier in the clip:wink:

It was just a random clip I selected from many. Mainly to test how it uploaded you to YouTube. Typically the audio isn't quite synced on that clip since uploading but it's fine on video playback.

I looked at that one before I purchased the GS8000L. I prefer having the screen, as you never know when it could come in handy. Plus the screen is really small and can be set so it is turned off but still recording. Mine is set to turn off after 2 minutes. How else would you know it is positioned correctly without a screen? The GS8000L has HDMI output also. Remember none of these cheap cams come with an SD card and usually wont work properly unless the have a minimum of 32GB.

I have the Road Angel dash cam and its great but it does have a downside ( no screen )

I was the exact same Andy. I would search and read reviews till I was blue in the face and then come full circle and not buy one until the next thread.
That was until my Mrs bought me this one for Christmas from Argos http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4557690.htm
It meant that if it broke within the first year it would be no hassle taking it back.
I only took it back and bought something else as it was bought at full price and I didn't think it was worth that.
I would get one at the half price though as that is probably worth it.

Nice one Steve! Thanks for that. Perfect.
That's a good price and, as you say, a pretty hassle free way to purchase and return if anything goes wrong.
Subject to me having any money left at all once I eventually get car insurance sorted for my son who has just passed his driving test yesterday I'll get two of those.
Trying to get an insurance policy for a 17 year old to come on my insurance for an elderly GTI is proving more of a head scratcher than a dash cam thread right now!
My older son was 18 when he passed his test and that seems to be an age where they'll more readily quote, he was straight on there for well under a grand.

Has anyone tried using a go pro as a dashcam? I really need to get a dashcam but some of the comments are putting me off the dedicated ones.
With the go pro I could use it in or out of the car. Seen a few videos on YouTube and the quality is good.
-
Don't judge a dash cam by YouTube footage as its compressed. Techmoan.com has some excellent reviews of quite a few cameras.

I will check this at work tomorrow

I 've been using my GoPro H3B as a dashcam for more than 4 years now, with no problems at all. The best way is to use it in the 'Frame' casing which keeps it cool.
Compared to the huge variety of dashcams on the market now, the GP option is quite expensive though.
If you're interested have a look at some footage on the tube...

Is there anyone from the north Hampshire area that can recommend someone to hardwire a dash cam?? Halfords offer the service quite cheap (£30) but they don't do the dash cam I want, I'm going to get a blackvue

Cheap or not, don't ever let Halfords near your car. Ever.

I hard wired a Blackvue in my Mk5 which I have since refitted in my Mk7. Its very straight forward. Here is a guide I did on the Mk5 on the 'other' forum.
Edit: Forgot the link!

Its so simple following the "how to" in the maintenance section http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=264743.0
It took me under 30 minutes the first time I did it.

Fair play, I'll heed that warning as I did ask myself is it worth the risk letting them near it

After a bit of a wait, I'm picking this one up tomorrow morning...

Mine is dedicated for a LHD model, but the version you guys need is readily available from them...with, or without the GPS module.
-
I have read that when you hardwire a dashcam in your car it will invalidate your warrenty. have hardwired my nextbase in my R so am a bit concerned if I have to take it in for any work.

I'll have to ask the dealer about that when I go and collect my GTD when it turns up
-
Although its hard wired no wires have been cut. It plugs into the fuse box.
Its probably not that different to plugging it into the charging socket.

The GTI/D/R have rear dimming mirrors so sticking that over your mirror is going to render that function useless.
-
Quite correct...sticking anything over the mirror will do that. I've yet to test it, but I'm led to believe the dashcam mirror has the auto dim as well, but I won't know until I test it.
I have a manual dim/flip switch on mine anyway, so it will be a bonus if it works.

Overall warranties cannot be arbitrarily 'voided'. A manufacturer may refuse warranty service on an item which has been inappropriately maintained or modified by a customer. They can't 'void' the warranty on an entire vehicle merely because a minor modification was made in an unrelated part.
