My 1.9 seems quite happy with 10W40 at this time of the year...mileage is the same as yours.

@OP: What engine???

Diesels with PD only use 5w40 with 505.1 spec, thought I'd use a good 5w40 anyway on all mk4 engines. Petrols use VW spec 502.00, ideally in combination with MB 229.3 or better 229.5 (not .31 or .51).

What is PD?

Pumpe Düse (a high pressure injection variety) - i.e. injector unit system rather than the old fashioned distributor pump injection.
PD creates injection pressure by actuation via cam shaft on the injector unit. The benefit of this is high injection pressure and high torque but it comes with higher stress for cams hence needs engine oil with extreme pressure additives - the reason VW created oil spec 505.1 whereas the non-PD diesels will survive with 505.00 spec oil

If you get the Titan race from opie oils, and a filter while your at it, call them up and they give you a discount code for new members (think its 10%) cost me about £48 for 5L of the Titan Race and a Mahle filter.
I had no idea which brand to use and they suggested what I am using, give them a call :)
