I know I'm getting ahead of myself here, as the new GTI has only just been ordered, but I was wondering with the connectivity in the latest Golfs - with Car-Net, MirrorLink, Android-Auto and Apple Car play, how much typical data these apps consume.
I don't have a personal mobile phone but instead a works one (an Iphone 6), which I'm also fully allowed to use for personal use (and do). As it's an apple phone, I assume I'll be just using Car-Net and Apple car-play, and I know this will vary by how much you use it, but my phone has only a 500mb monthly data allowance (I normally use it with Wi-Fi at work and home, so don't tend to eat into this allowance unless I'm out on the road).
Just need to figure out if I need to look at a bigger plan for me personally (i.e. using a USB UMTS stick, with a data SIM in plugged into the USB socket of the advanced phone pack in the centre console, rather than use the mobile ? Will this work ?

Android Auto for me uses very little - you have the option in Google Maps to download map data for offline usage. If you do that over wifi then you aren't ever going to be using much mobile data at all.

has anybody been able to register their vehicle for car net
it just keeps saying theres an error and try again later when trying to add my new car

It's hard to say really, guess it depends exactly how and to what level you might be using it. I recently started using my App-connect (Apple CarPlay with iPhone 6 Plus), and now use it daily, several times a day. I've not yet gone over my monthly data allowance but then my o2 plan gives me 3GB data, so quite a lot more than your 500mb. 500mb seems a low allowance to me, if you can up it, I would.
Music wise, I download Apple Music playlists at home over wifi for later use in the car. That saves eating into data allowance.
Ginger ok - I've managed to register my vehicle for Car-net but getting onto the system has proved futile. All but given up for now u till my patience with it is restored!

Car stick is just a 3G/4G dongle powered from a USB port. It takes a SIM card (of your choice) and has a WIFI AP on it.
Given that the MIB2 needs to connect to a wifi AP to get its data connection (because VW can't seem to bring the integrated solution (premium phone prep) to the UK for no possible reason whatsoever you might as well use your current mobile phone rather than pay for and then feed another 3G/4G device, especially one that expensive!
Cheaper USB powered 3G/4G router/AP's are available on ebay if you really must do this.
