Hi all, new to this so please bear with me and thank you in advance for any help you can offer.
I recently bought a 2000 GTI 1.8T (which I've wanted since forever)! The problem with mine is difficult to describe..it pulls well in the lower gears (although what I am about to describe does SOMETIMES happen in the lower gears), in 4th and 5th at about 3200k rpm + at hard acceleration the car seems to hold back and I wouldn't describe it as a misfire but the engine seems to struggle and doesn't pull well. If I accelerate gently in excess of 3200 rpm it doesn't happen. It's almost like flooring it in 4h and 5th at 3200 rpm causes the issue.

do you have a boost gauge fitted? if so what are the readings.
have you performed a fault code check? you can buy the scanners off ebay for about 15-20 and they are a god send for diagnosing faults :smiley:

Could be the clutch slipping? Flooring in 4th and 5th at those revs could be loading up the clutch with all the torque.
Do the revs increase a lot quicker than expected, compared to the speed of the car?

The fact that it doesn't happen when accelerating gently suggests that clutch slippage could be the problem, so I agree with this.

cant see it being the clutch if op said it only does it sometimes :whistle: get it scanned see what comes up

Clutch can be intermittent. They generally start slipping when up to temp and up inclines and under full throttle
My old MK4 was fine on the flat but as soon as it saw a hill the clutch would grumble unless you applied the throttle gently, then it would be ok
Ideally need more info from the OP

the op mentions it holds back when applying full throttle surly if it was the clutch he would notice the revs going up but the car not moving as it should :undecided: I would have it scanned 1st to see what came up
