Title: Car-net query
Post by: Pixwix on 15 February 2016, 22:56
Just acquired a MY2016 Gti with MIB 2 (I think!).
Despite researching through forums and VW UK site I am still unclear as to what I should have access to.
Car-net, do I have access to Guide and Inform? I can see traffic info. but I haven't set hotspot on my phone up, could it be old data? If the previous owner registered can I re-register? does it matter?
If when I try to access AppConnect and it asks for an activation key I presume that means option was not selected and therefore I would be paying over £200 to VW for the key?

I am quite happy with what I have but would be hate to be missing out on anything

AFAIK, in order for the online stuff to work it has to use your phone's internet connection.

In order to use the phone, the phone must be plugged in using a USB cable.

The traffic info you are seeing is probably just the UK RDS system that works over FM radio, not the online data feed from VW.

Ah, that does make sense now Fredgroves. I'll try setting up a hotspot and see if I can get the online stuff.

From memory when I collected my late 2015 MK7 also with MIB2 the car-net doesn't need a plugged in phone but does require the phone to be set to act as a wi-fi hotspot and the phone and car linked in the usual way for wi-fi. The app-connect however does need the phone to be "plugged" in if you have the option, which if you get the same message as me "need dealer authorisation code" then you also don't have it.

Thanks Sokkia...I've had a bit of a play, no success so far but maybe previous keepers settings are confusing the issue.
By the way I am struggling to delete their phones from list of phones, does anyone know how?

The car net bit is pretty poor, you might as well just use your phone to google for information rather than getting the car to tell you what the weather and news is.

You'll get 3 points and a hefty fine if caught while driving. Whereas if its on the head unit the police are more than likely to ignore you. Yet doing both will take your eyes off the road!

I wasn't proposing to do it whilst driving! There is a warning on the head unit to say it's only for use of passengers whilst on the move too.

No I wasn't meaning you were. I'm just saying both are crazy to do on the move yet one you can do legally.
It amazes me they don't allow Video in motion when you have passengers (which the car can tell no problem) yet it will allow you to read the days news on the move.

Hope this can help!

First step would be creating a car-net account from VW site - https://www.volkswagen-car-net.com/portal/en_GB/web/gb/login#! (https://www.volkswagen-car-net.com/portal/en_GB/web/gb/login#!) (to be honest I'm not sure what would be the case if previous owner has already registered vehicle, but worth a try!).

As for what you get access to.. it should be (at least, that's what I have) 'Guide and Inform' - online services like traffic/weather etc. and 'App-connect - CarPlay/Android Auto/MirrorLink.

Unless you have Advanced phone in car (so SIM in glove box) the data will come from a hotspot - of which the best way I've found is buy a mobile dongle, keep it plugged in to power (there's power in boot so get a little usb charger and it's out of sight!) and connect the car to that wifi from dongle for always-on data! ...works for me and have constant data for live-traffic etc...

Thanks, Speedyslug....I have noticed there is a link under the contracts section in the Faq  that says 'transfer/sale' and details what to as the 'new owner' , currently not working for me  but VW uk says there is an issue with the website at the moment, I'll get there eventually I hope.
