In the course of restoring my mk2 (still!!!) I purchased the following 2 items which I was informed were for the sill area on my 3 door car and were used to stop the sideskirts fouling the paintwork.
Looking at the car at present I can see that the foil tape used is a fraction of the size of the items I have so now I am at a loss as to what they are.....local dealer has no idea now either.
I will try and get pics posted but in the meantime part number:
191-853-386-A-6DA
Only thing I know is they are very rare and there are none available any more from VW....
-
ETKA says its.
Trim foil - Satin Black
No idea what it is though.
-
It sticks along the sills either side, You stick it on and cut to length :)
Only the GTIs got it. Its the equivalent of the sill extensions fitted to 90 spec big bumper GTIs.
Didn't think it was still available from VW!
-
Here is a pic of one of the two trim foils....I have been told it's for the lower panel/sill on a 5dr Golf.....anyone able to confirm this?

Rubjonny....I picked these up in Canada at a VW dealer and they cost me over £100!!!
I take it they were for the small bumper Gti before it got the arches and skirts? I just cant picture having seen a car with them.....
I am sure there will be a demand for these as VW here tell me they've been obsolete since 1993...
Have you any idea of the part I am actually looking for (the tapes that run just under the upper edge of the side skirt to protect the paint...very narrow texured item)?
Cheers,
Duncan
-
Yup they are for the pre-big bumper models, stuck along the sills :)

If you have the 90 spec body kit, the bits you need are:
193 853 805 - protect foil for side member left
193 853 806 - protect foil for side member right
-
You are indeed the greatest!
A thousand thank-yous! :)

If you have the 90 spec body kit, the bits you need are:

193 853 806 - protect foil for side member right
what are these for then? can't work it out!! so they sit under the 90 spec side skirt to stop them damaging the paint?
-
Yeah, that it Joe.....the sit under the leading edge of the sideskirt on each side to stop damaging the paint.....one of these annoying little parts that you only find when you take a lot of other stuff off the car!!!
-
oh right. seems to me anything would do then! if you don't see it really i wouldn't bother getting genuine vag, unless your going for concourse i suppose......
-
black bodge tape or silver duck tape, take your pick
-
LOL.....well I was going to resort to the bodge tape....however, managed to actually source the correct parts for a very reasonable price and no trimming will be required so less chance of me making a total arse of it!
Thanks again guys for all your help.
So, if anyone is looking for the two sill foils I now have for a pre-90 Gti drop me a line! Other than that they will be going in the parts for sale section or e-bay very shortly....
-
Rubjonny,
Need your help again please! The part numbers you gave me relate to the 5dr Gti and mine is the 3dr......could you do me a huge favour and look up the part numbers for the 3dr?
Hope not being cheeky to ask....
Ever grateful,
Duncan
-
There isn't any other part numbers for that strip, they are the same for both 3 & 5 door :)
-
Right, think I may have solved the riddle with these parts.
The ones listed on ETKA dont differ between a 3 or 5 door car but clearly they need to be a different length/shape to fit the 3 door.
Therefore, it seems they come supplied to fit the 5dr but with a pattern on the rear backing that you trim to shape.....thereby allowing it to go on the 3dr.
Complicated? You bet!
Haven't tried this yet but it's my best guess so far.....anyone with a different idea I'd be delighted to hear!
-
you talking about the ones you have or the ones I gave you the part number for?
-
Rubjonny,
I've managed to bodge a pic of the area of the car these are for although I appreciate it's still not very clear but hope it helps.....its for the part numbers you supplied, not the ones I originally had:
They should fit here:

-
Ah ok, yeah you probably just have to trim them to fit, its the same with alot of bits they sell :)
-
OK mate....that's what I reckon too.....pain in the butt to try and do mind! lol
Please ignore the state of the car in the pic.....and the winter wheels.....mint RA's waiting to go on! :)
Thanks for the advice as always :)
-
Royal Blue Metallic Kicks Butt!
-
Surely the 3 and 5 door cars have the same sill length. The only difference will be the fit around the bottom door edge of either a 3 or 5 door car.
-
Yup Royal Blue is awesome, except when you try to find pannels to match! Always see Helios but not Royal blue :(
As for sill strips yes the sills are the same length for 3 & 5 door, I assume the strips go inside the door jams so need to be trimmed to fit accordingly.
-
*bump*
Still stumped!
-
just trim them damnit
-
I was on the verge of doing that and then someone at VW Technical told me these are definitely not the correct parts for that part of the car and the bits I do need would be supplied in the correct size and shape.
Helpfully though they were not able to tell me what bits I do actually need then!!!
ETKA is no use either it seems......*sigh*
-
I'm telling you they are the bits you need, there is only 1 part listed for 3 & 5 door models :)
-
RJ, I hear what you are saying.....according to the VW bod though, the parts that are listed are indeed the same for 3 & 5 door....but aren't the correct part for this application. He stated the parts on ETKA are not the ones that run inside of the door sill.
I know these bits are very minor in the whole scheme of things but it's driving me nuts nonetheless!! LOL
As always I appreciate your help.....you would do a much better job at VW HQ than some that are there mate...
-
Are you sure he was talking about the protective strips and not the plastic bits that hold the carpets down?
Looking at the plastic sill extensions on my GTI, there is a thin black vynal strip that runs underneath, and then into the door jamb up to a lip. He must be talking out of his arse, I'm sorry but there is no way a parts monkey knows better than the global VW parts ordering system
-
Well there is a lot of truth in that for sure! LOL
However, I do have to admit that the stuff I got does not resemble what is on the car in either shape, texture ir finish. It's a lot thicker and 'grainy' wheras the tapes on there just now are practically smooth, like black insulation tape.
I looked at them again with the trimming idea in mind but there is no pattern on the backing that would help do this and it look frikikin hard to cut or trim to the shape needed....especially where it narrows to just a few mm at the rear quarter panel.....
I give up!
-
Mine is grainy
-
LOL
Bugger it! I am just going to leave them off!
