Title: Outside temp sensor.
Post by: bgbazz on 05 February 2016, 16:40
It would appear that I have a dodgy outside temp sensor on my Mk4 TDI and I would really appreciate some advice.

Over the last week or so, the outside temp values, both in the clock display and on the climatronic display, have been giving abnormal readings...today for instance, the actual air temp was around the 10 degree mark during my 30 mile trip, but both displays fluctuated between 11.5 degrees and MINUS 45 degrees! This is not the first time it's happened and it's got me a bit baffled.

My first question is...exactly where is the sensor/unit situated on the car and what does it look like? I intend giving it a close inspection, cleaning, checking connections etc, but I don't know where it is or what it looks like.

Second question is...has anyone else had this problem and what did you do to cure it?

Looking forward to some knowledgable replies.

Thanks Barry...checked them and it appears they only have a coolant sensor to fit mine.

Finally got around to this job today...removed the little grill thingy, but no sign of the sensor! Searched high and low, even behind the other side...damned if I can find it!!

Anyone know of other positions this sensor could be fitted in??

Answered the question myself.

It was sitting on top of the uppermost horn and taped to that horns wiring...have no idea why it was done that way, but it's now back in the correct location. The contacts were really grungy, but a dose of electrical contact cleaner, followed by a short blast with the air nozzle and a light spray of WD40...working fine now.
