Finally got round to ordering a Golf GTD, a dealer has managed to change an order he had in place to the spec I want so hopefully I'll have it for the beginning of April, it's due at the dealers on the 4th so it gives me time to sell my current car privately as the trade in offers were quite low IMO.
Anyway, I've ordered a.........

Great car and great spec, but why out of interest, did you go for rear view camera and not the "parking Pack" which includes the camera and park assist for a lower price ?

I did consider getting the parking pack, but I'd never use the park assist so decided against it...........but now you've got me thinking maybe I should have got it for when the Mrs is out in the car 🤔🤔

The rear view camera is cheaper than the parking pack by £85 I believe.
I ordered it and never bothered with park assist.

But you are getting 2 options for an extra £85 which is hardly going to break the bank :laugh:
I've got it and must admit I've only used it 3 or 4 times mostly to show folk in the car how it works. However every time I use it I keep thinking its a really handy feature to use but keep forgetting.
It can also get you out of tight parking spaces as well as in.

I have it in my CC and I have only tried it twice so all I got for my £160(I think that was how much it was) was a button by the gearstick. I can park quicker than it can and in a tighter spot. Neighbor has it on his CC and it has caused him to damage his alloys a few times because it can't see curbs very well.

Congratulations it will be a great car.
I got the parking pack mostly just so there wasn't a blank button on the dash but I've found I use it pretty much every time I Park now.
The camera is brilliant though especially at night with the 90% tinted windows.

Agree good spec.
Rear camera is a useful safety aid I find but only use the Park Assist occasionally to get out of really tight blocked in situations.
Using it to park takes too long and causes frustration to other drivers while it goes through its sequences.

Basically a friend of mine has a detailing business and I've had a chat with him about prepping my car, I'd rather he done it than the dealer. He'd need access to water and electricity. I know I should have discussed it while I was there but it completely slipped my mind.

You're right. That's what makes options so subjective. What suits one person won't suit another.

Its dealer specific. I've read on here folk getting their own detailer to prep the car at the dealers before handover and others saying their dealer wouldn't allow it.
At the end of the day, the dealer is responsible for the car until handover and you accept it. Who's to say a detailer comes in, damages the car and then tries to claim it wasn't them. Who would then be liable? Certainly not you as the car hasn't been signed over yet.
Why don't you just do what a lot of folk do on here, get them to hand over the car with the protective sheets on. You can unwrap and inspect it then take it to any place of your choice to have done whatever you want? It does take the gloss off what can be a special moment as you're picking up a dirty car but some folk don't like all that stuff.

Other owners have driven the car away un-prepped I believe

I don't think most dealers would be that happy to let someone else prep the car on their premises for all kinds of reasons.
If your friend has a ' detailing business' he should have access to water and electricity in his normal business even as a mobile operator.
Why not ask the dealer to do the normal PDI but not prep the car.
I unwrapped my car at the dealers checked for any paint damage & the normal things before the sign off & then prepped it myself at home. That way you are sure you're not getting paint swirls.
Most dealers nowadays are quite happy with this type of request.
Your friend could then detail it for if you wanted.

I only assumed he'd need access to water and electricity, but yes you are right I'd imagine he has his own source for water and electricity, he's been in that game for a while now.
If the dealer comes back and says nail just do as you said and get the work done after collection

I've stuck with the tartan cloth, haven't had cloth seats for years but £1700 seemed a bit overpriced to me, I had a rear camera on a couple of BMW's I've driven in the last few months and found it really handy and noticed the floodlit look

I wouldn't in case there is a problem with the bodywork. Just make sure that you check everything carefully and preferably inside under good light to check for paint damage especially swirl marks. If your checking your car outside make sure that you bring a proper light to check all the paint. Better still bring your detailer with you to check the car over.
When I picked up my CC I checked everything over and noticed that the front bumper was off centre and made sure that the dealer manager knew about it. I was happy to have the bumper sorted out the following week but by the time I brought the car back I found out that the car had been damaged and the front bumper had been replaced(they left the parts sticker on the inside of the bumper) I was going to reject the car but the dealer looked after me to the point of just over £2k
I had the car checked by 3 different independent body shops and they all said that it was light front bumper damage and that no body panels had been painted. Only other problem was that the driver side headlight must have been damaged as well because the light beam shock/bounced when I went over uneven ground so they replaced that as well.

I've had s reply to the email I sent to the dealer and they say they don't have a problem with the car being prepped by my detailer. Hopefully that stance won't change after the arrival of the car.

My dealers has offered full Gardex protection free of charge but I'm still unsure whether to accept the offer or do it myself.
If I thought they would apply it properly, I'd give them the go ahead.

Park assist is fantastic on the odd few times you remember to use it.
It's the one thing I miss from my GTI.
Ok, it's one of several things I miss from my GTI but it's a biggie.
Most people that specced it will probably hardly ever use it but once in a while you'll thank yourself you ticked that option.
It has got me into and more importantly out of some really tight spots and the money and hassle saved from not scraping a bumper or more likely an alloy is sooooo worth it.
I was a bit sceptical about it but am now fully converted.
It is brilliant and more importantly brilliantly simple.
The rear camera is a bit meh.
Great at first but really not that essential.
But on a GTI/D the park pack is the first and possibly only thing I'd spec.

I must admit Andy that the camera this time around hasn't been as impressive when I had it in the Mk6.
In the Mk6 it was the only parking aid I had and found it really invaluable. So much so it was high up on my list of things for the next car to have!!

That's just the thing, I found that even with the camera in my last car I tended to rely on the mirrors and sensors more but the camera was useful when parallel parking at times when you had to reverse quite close to something or bay parking when there was a post that couldn't be seen in the mirrors such as supermarkets that have pathways behind the parking bays and 3 foot posts that are invisible when reversing.
I did consider retro fitting one to the R when I first got it but after a few weeks decided that for the time and expense I could manage without it 99% of the time.
Like you Steve, I had no sensors in either of my mk6s as they were both bought pre registered. I would have really loved the camera but just never got round to fitting one. I usually find if I've not done something inside of the first six to nine months that by then I'm already planning my next car! :laugh:
I did consider the dealer fit parking sensors with the mk6s but they sit a bit proud of the bumper and don't look quite as natural as the factory fit ones aesthetically.
If I'd have grazed a bumper on any of those cars I'd have been furious with myself for not getting off my backside and getting a camera or sensors prior to the event!!
Either way you look at it - the park pack is a great option and good value.

I park on a very dark car park at the gym and the sensors would detect any obstacle behind me but not the 3'' deep rain gullies in the floor, so the camera will be invaluable for me.
