Hi, I'm new to this.. I have a golf mk4 1.4 51 plate.
The car was sitting for a while had a new gearbox put in, the battery died so I brought a new one it wouldn't start it was just turning over, I checked the coil pack to see if it was sparking, I changed the fuel pump relay still didn't start so I changed the fuel pump it was trying to start so I put jump lead on and it started! After a few days I was driving it and the EPC light came on went off then came back on with the oil light flashing but then the oil light turnt off, then after a mile or so it just lost power and died the car does have a small hole in the exhaust but I was planning on changing that in a few days, after it died it was back to square one and it's just turning over and not even trying to start... I'm puzzled

Check fault codes before changing parts..... check them now.
-
It came up with engine module disabled

16946,17978,16705,16804,16955,16712,16490 these are the fault codes from the engine 🙈

have you checked all the earth straps are tight
-
Where would I find them pal?

Where would I find them pal?
there is usually 1 on the gearbox that's why I ask as I had a similar issue with a car many years ago and this was the cause
-
Okay thanks I'll have a look into that.. It could be as it had a gearbox put in a while ago keep you posted!! :)

this was reason I asked s I noticed you said that in your op

Do you know where abouts on the gearbox and how I get to it?

not sure on your car

Check all fault codes and this is what came up... 18011,16705,16955,00668,00532,01330,00562,01176,01330,00562,01176,01331,01332,01359,01333,01334

Check that the connection on the central electrics are all pushed in firmly. If this does not help and you don't have ground issues I would take the CE out and have a close look at it. Possibly something burnt out.... or you have a leak on engine room bulkhead and water in it!!
Once you think you found reason then delete all fault codes and drive a short distance and see if/what comes back.

How do I know if there's water in the baulkhead?
-
Could it have something to do with the crank sensor? As the exhaust has a leak would it vibrate and maybe bust it?
-
Just take the central electrics out and see if wet.....
-
The ecu you mean?
-
No, the CE (central electrics), i.e. fuse box / relay carrier under steering wheel / at door sill.
Although there is another under bonnet too.
-
That's all fine not wet

Bumo

Bump

You have electrical issues, you will need a wiring diagram and trace wiring to all relevant sensors.
-
Think it could be the crank sensor maybe?
-
Maybe?
You are looking at such a multitude of faults that I would doubt it is a single sensor. Most likely you have a quite serious wiring fault.
As I said earlier, get a wiring diagram and a multimeter out and retrace all connections.
