Title: Facelift coming March 2016
Post by: Mr.McGee on 24 January 2016, 22:04
Long time lurker :)

I'm about to pull the trigger on a Golf GTD pretty soon. I was aware that a facelift Golf was on the cards for the end of the year so I didn't mind as that's a while off, but now I read this article: http://www.worldcarfans.com/1160124103250/vw-golf-facelift-coming-this-march-followed-shortly-by-r420

How does it usually work with facelift models? Will all the packs be available from launch day? i.e. Sport and Sound etc.
I'd hate to hold off on the current model only to find out that something like Sport and Sound pack isn't available or worse, has been retired (worse case scenario).

Interested in your thoughts on this rumour/announcement.

The golf has never been face lifted before so if it happens so no one can be sure what will happen with the relevant packs.

Never done a facelift before? Well, they've always called it another mark...

Apparently this one will be the Mk8 if this article is to be believed:

http://www.motor1.com/spy/60466/2017-vw-golf-rendering-previews-what-to-expect?v=2&s=1&tm=1&tmm=1

A slight cosmetic blow over, LED lights, Passat full digital clocks, HUD and controversially no 3 door version!

2017 I guess was more of a typical target for Golf lifecycles, but seems they have brought this forward - presumably to boost interest in VW - those billions of dollars aren't going to magically appear and even VAG will struggle to fill that giant hole without getting a bit radical....

Bloody VW!
I've got an offer with almost 18% discount. I'll hardly get anywhere near that with a new release, right?
Sorry, but I'm trying to convince myself to bite the bullet and go with the current version

Seems remarkably odd they'd do a facelift when they've only just stuck the ClubSport on the German configurator.
Mind you if there was one model that could do with a prettier nose...

Mind you that might explain the delay Evo1986 posted up the other day.

I'd guess it would just be the lower end Golfs getting a new front bumper. The standard mk7 bumper looks dull and frumpy as hell and would benefit from being binned off no end.
The GTI/D, R and R Line all still look reasonably fresh.

I can't believe they won't offer a 3 door model?

Is this a report we are taking as something concrete?

Didn't VW release the MK 6 Edition 35 in 2012? The same year as the MK 7 was released?

It does seem odd to do this with the Clubsport not even in production till March?

Maybe it will just be a very mild update of bits, rather than an actual facelift.

Still be surprised if the R400 happens though, it would have a very very limited run.

A special edition (aka parts bin special) to finish out a production line is not an unusual concept in motor vehicle manufacturing actually..

VW usually do free leather on a model runout - see that coming in and the MK7 is definitely on its way out. Let's hope the MK8 is an improvement on the MK7, the MK6 was nowhere near as good looking as the MK5,  it looked like a MK5 restyled by Toyota. But then again, an ugly MK8 won't make me want one!

Any news on a new/updated A3?  The MQB A3 was out about 8 months before the MK7 Golf, makes sense it would get the update before the Golf, unless VW has been hit a lot harder with the emissions scandal (doubt that, looking at the big deposit contribution some Audis are getting - £5k off a TT! ).

We all have opinions, the mk5 to me looked like something wasn't quite right, especially the 3 door, and in my opinion the mk6 is the third best looking of all the golfs (behind the mk2 then mk1). The mk5 could have looked superb but it had too much mk4 in its appearance still. but the mk6 saved the day. The mk 7 is better looking than the 5 but still behind the 6 in my opinion

All these cars designs take cues from a) general car design trends b) a look that crosses a manufacturers model range.

So over time you see angular, square, rounded, jelly mould and all sorts.

The manufacturer cross platform look is driven by a desire to re-use components as much as a coherent design strategy.

I prefer the harsh angular look as opposed to the rounded off ones, so Mk5 and Mk7 look to me better than Mk6 and what we've seen of the Mk8 mockups.

Would it stop me buying a Mk8? Nope.

VW like to get their money's worth from press stuff... the "new" technology they show in that AutoExpress article is the same stuff they talked about in VWDriver magazine in 2014 (ish).

Lighter body panels, heat resistance dash panels, MIB gimmics and 20 speed DSG.

I guess its all coming eventually...

Whether the "mild facelift" is what the other article talked about (calling it a Mk8) or whether this is the Mk8... I guess we will never know until an actual sales announcement is made.

This stuff is intentionally cryptic I suppose to stop people like the OP from saying "I won't buy now, I will wait"

The golf has never been face lifted before

The Mk2 was facelifted in August 1989.

The mk2 had two.
1988 model year saw the wipers changed from LHD to RHD, the quarter lights removed and door mirrors moved forward. The interior had a few changes (steering wheel and trim changes) plus for the face it had new grilles with wider slats and less of them.
The GTI 8v got digifant injection.
1990 MY saw other changes such as the GTI & GL getting big bumpers, plus trim changes on some models.

The MK1 had an arse lift for 1982 plus different interior.

The mk3 had a minor facelift around 1996 on some models.

Just going purely from memory here, there were probably other revisions along the line.

Not sure whether or not we'll see free Leather with the Mk7

The Match and GT models recently got replaced with Match Edition and GT Edition, bringing extra kit such as Nav and bigger alloys.
