Title: Correct front bumper alignment?
Post by: Peeair on 20 January 2016, 17:00
Hi Everyone,

I had a bumper respray just before Christmas, picked the car up and didn't think much more of it.
Then tonight when having a look around the front I spotted a gap between the front grille and the bumper.
I can't remember if that's how it came from the factory or if it has just been re-fitted badly.
Would you guys be able to have a look at yours to put my mind at rest?

Thanks in advance!

What's the other side of the grille like, is it the same?
That's definitely not fitted right. The grille should be on top of the bumper not behind it.

That looks a right shambles!
Anyone can see that's not been fitted correctly.

It's the same both sides.
I think the the grille is sitting above the bumper rather than behind it.
Either way it makes me wonder how they could get it wrong? Surely its just a case of putting the bumper/grille in place and tightening the screws?

I recently took my grille off as I was planning on doing something with the badge but changed my mind but its pretty straight forward. I'd have a go myself if I was you. It just looks like its not been fitted correctly

I can't get photobucket to take my upload but here's a picture of mine

Even the gap between your grille and light looks abnormally large!! It could be because the grille is sitting on the bumper though.

It's definitely not right but it could be just not clipped in correctly. It's really easy to remove the grill though if you want to try re-seating it yourself. I took mine off the GTI to fit the red GTI badge.
Open the bonnet and there's 2-3 torx screws. Remove those and then just give it a gentle tug, the whole grill will pop out easy. I think there's a few tabs/clips along the bottom, maybe they're just not seated into the bumper properly.

Thanks for the input, I shall take a look tomorrow.
If I can't see anything obviously out of place I'll be going back to VW on Friday.

There looks to be a bit more to it than just refitting the grille. It looks like the gap between the grille and headlight will still be too wide.

Thanks Sootchucker that's really good of you.

It looks like the entire grille needs pulling forwards and then the headlights need pulling in tighter.
I wouldn't have thought there would be that much room for error when putting these things together!

No problem. If they have removed the headlights to get at the bumper, there's quite a bit of lateral adjustment on them when putting them back on apparently. I'd probably also be asking for an alignment check of the lights as well.

Will do!
What amazes and frustrates me is that the work was done at VW, not a back street garage.

Surely the headlights wouldn't need to be removed. You have to take the bumper off before you can remove the headlights.

Totally agree. I don't know why the lights would have to come off.
To the OP, does the gap between the grille and lights run evenly or does it get bigger the closer it gets to the bumper?
I think because the grille hasn't been put on right its exaggerating the gap between it and the light. Probably once the grille is on properly it will sit flusher.
It looks like they have screwed the top of the grille in first rather than pushing the bottom in until it clips in and then screwing it.

From memory I think it runs evenly.
But even when the grille is positioned properly, to my eyes it looks as if the lights will still need to be adjusted to reduce the gap.
I'm not an expert so we shall see.
